Main scientific achievements: Research and development of the technologies of heterogeneous-catalytic processes, creation of catalysts for the processes of oil-refining and petro-chemistry, as well as improvement of the oil-refining products quality. Development of the hydrodynamics of lift-reactor systems for conducting heterogeneous-catalytic processes, theoretical foundations of the chemical processes efficiency in the systems with "fluidized" bed and "upflow" of the microsphere catalyst. Studying of the catalyst flow index effect on the processes efficiency. One of the authors of the high-efficient complex for catalytic cracking Г-43-107; the complex is operating in the refineries of Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine, Latvia and Azerbaijan. A part of the researches is directed to the creation of the processes of hydrocracking, hydroisomerization, destructive isomerization on zeolite-containing catalysts as well as the processes for preparation of esters, permitting to improve the oil-refining products quality. As a result of these researches the technology for production of ecologically pure unleaded AI-93 and AI-95 gasoline has been developed. M.I.Rustamov laid the foundations of the researches in the field of hydrogen energy in Azerbaijan. He has developed the conception of oil- refining, gas-refining and petrochemical industries progress in Azerbaijan and on its basis there has been proposed the schemes and proposals on complex modernization of refineries. M.I.Rustamov presented Azerbaijan in international conferences and symposia. He is a chairman of the specialized council on defence of doctor theses on specially "Petro-chemistry and Chemical Technology of Oil and Gas Refining" and chairman of the scientific-coordination council "Oil-Refining and Petro-chemistry of NASA".

Membership with international and foreign scientific organizations: During the period of 1980-1991 M.I. Rustamov was a member of International Association on Hydrogen Energy, Bureau on Hydrogen Energy at the USSR Academy of Sciences, Scientific Councils "Petro-chemistry" and "Catalysis" of the USSR, Academy of Sciences, Scientific Council "Catalysis and its Application in Industry" of State Committee on Science and Engineering at the USSR Council of Ministers as well as an international coordinator of the co-operation of academies of sciences of socialist countries on "Catalytic Cracking and Destructive Isomerization"
Pedagogical activities From 1993 till 1995 he was a professor at the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy and from 1999 till 2005 was professor at the Baku State University.
Other activities: The founder and chief editor of the journal "Processes of petro-chemistry and oil refining", member of editorial council of "Chemical Journal of Azerbaijan", member of the specialized council for awarding academic degrees and a member of the Academic Council of IPCP. 
Awarding and prizes

In 1979 he was awarded the honorary title "Honored scientific worker", in 1982 awarded title of  State Prize winner of Azerbaijan, in 1985 he was awarded the medal of academic Y.H.Mammadaliyev, in 2002 by the Economic Cooperation Organization (Summit in Istanbul) was awarded a diploma and prize for his work in the science and technology field. In 2004 he was awarded the "Orden of Glory" of Azerbaijan.
