Establishment history

As the land of oil production, its industrial processing and production of lubricating oils on an industrial scale, Azerbaijan first in the former Soviet Union began to exploit fields and manufacture additives to lubricating oils.

The first domestic additives in the former USSR that improved the quality of lubricating oils were developed thanks to fruitful team work of specialized laboratory during many years established in 1945 in Azerbaijan Scientific Research Institute named after Kuibyshev, headed by academician A.M.Guliyev. For the first time this team carried out fundamental work that became the basis for creation of the industrial production of efficient domestic additives in the country. For the first time the team conducted fundamental research that became base for creation of industrial production of effective additives.  Depressor АзНИИ lowering freezing point of lubricants, detergent-dispersive additives АзНИИ-4, АзНИИ-5 and АзНИИ-6  and multifunctional alkylphenol additive АзНИИ-ЦИАТИМ-1 were first additives   production of which was created and regulated in the former USSR.

In 1948 A.M.Guliyev with collaborators were awarded the title of the State Prize Laureate for creation of АзНИИ  depressor and its use in industry.

In 1950 A.M.Guliyev with collaborators were secondly awarded the title of the State Prize Laureate for creation of АзНИИ-4 additive and its use in the production.

At the suggestion of outstanding scientists of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, who took into account the success in the field of creation and use of additives and the great importance of the problem in 1965 on the basis of this laboratory the first profiled Institute of Chemistry of Additives of Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences (ICA of AAS ) was established in the country.

Academician A.M.Guliyev was a founder, organizer and permanent director of the Institute of Chemistry of Additives till 1987. Since 1987 the Institute has been headed by one of academician A.M.Guliyev’s students academician V.M.Farzaliyev.

Basic activity directions

-investigation of theoretical questions of chemistry of additives - action mechanism of additives, correlation between composition and efficiency of functional action, synergism and antagonism of additives, kinetics of various organic reactions used for synthesis of additives;

- synthesis of new organic compounds and investigation of them as additives to lubricating oils, fuels, lubricants and other special liquids and as well as metal corrosion inhibitors;

-investigation of functional properties of various types of additives and development of additive compositions;

-development of various types of lubricating  and fuel compositions, lubricants and other special liquids on the base of newly synthesized additives;

-development of technologies, modeling and optimization of processes of production of newly synthesized effective additives and  as well as corrosion inhibitors.

Main scientific achievements

As a result of the fundamental investigations the action mechanism of additives with different functions were studied, the relationship between composition, structure and functional properties of additives were identified. Owing to these investigations the purposeful synthesis of high-performance additives with optimal structure was predicted and realized. So, a new generation of antioxidants with combined action, high-performance anti-wear, anti-scuff, multifunctional alkylphenolate and sulfonate, antimicrobial and polymeric additives to lubricating oils, fuels and special liquids, also inhibitors protecting metals from corrosion were synthesized. Fundamental studies were also carried out in the field of the synthesis of new organic compounds and a new generation of additives and developing new methods for their synthesis and studying the kinetics and mechanism of used various organic reactions.

New physiologically active substances synthesized jointly with international research groups using fine organic synthesis methods and modern possibilities of computer chemistry, antioxidant activity in living organisms, various enzymes and inhibitory effect on their isoforms (carbonic anhydrase (CA) isoenzymes, lactoperoxidase (LPO), polyphenol oxidase (PFO), glutathionereductase (GPr), 6-phosphogluconatedehydrogenase (6-PGD), glucose-6-phosphatedehydrogenase (GPD), acetylcholinesterase (AChE), butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), glutathione-S-transferase (GSTT) were studied at the University of Florence in Italy and Universities of Ataturk, Bartin, Sinop and Marmara in Turkey and proved to be highly effective. The studied substances have a potential therapeutic effect on pathological processes leading to such global diseases of modern medicine as a malignant tumor (cancer), diabetes, glaucoma, Alzheimer's disease (memory, mental retardation). Some of the studied compounds are 10 times more effective than tocopherol and α-trolox preparations used as standard ones.

The antioxidant properties of new substances synthesized in cooperation with scientists from the Irkutsk academician A.A.Favorsky Chemical Institute of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences in relation to the oxidation of hydrocarbons, as well as the inhibitory effect of substances with therapeutic potential on various enzymes and isoenzymes, were studied. As a result, nitrogen-, phosphorus-, selenium- and sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds were shown to be potent inhibitors of these metabolic enzymes. This result may allow the development of new drugs for the treatment of a number of global diseases (glaucoma, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, etc.)

Within the framework of a joint international project carried out jointly with the Institute of Biochemistry of Biologically Active Compounds of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the effectiveness of new compounds obtained by us (cyclic derivatives of thiourea and acetophenone) was evaluated in the laboratory "Molecular Genetics" of the Partner Institute in experimental animal models, and computer calculations of the spectrum of biological activity were don. The compounds have been proven to be highly effective compared to standard preparations.

As a result of an international joint research carried out by leading specialists of the Center for Computer Research of the University of Buffalo and the Baku Engineering University, at the Institute there have been achieved important innovations in computer studies of the theoretical mechanism of individual reactions of fine organic synthesis by quantum-mechanical calculations using the capabilities of modern computer software, studied some one-stage three-component reactions, found and experimentally confirmed by theoretical calculations the optimal conditions for obtaining target substances as a result of this reaction.

Along with the activities in the field of additives, lubricating oils and special liquids, there are the scientific achievements in the field of solving also other problems of the Republic. So, the rational use technology of the unique medicinal Naftalan oil has been developed by the scientists of the Institute and applied at a pilot scale. In addition, in the field of creation and application of high-performance corrosion inhibitors to protect metals from corrosion, reagents stabilizing the physico-mechanical properties of drilling fluids used in drilling, various disinfectants and medicines there were successfully conducted studies.

Employees of the Institute are also involved in the implementation of a number of government programs. In 2015-2020, the institute conducted research in the field of synthesis and study of physiologically active substances in 2 research programs of ANAS.

Along with the fundamental research the Institute has achieved perceptible progress in the field of applied research.

The first projects of the ICA team applied in industry was production of СБ-3 and СК-3 sulfonate additives. For the first time at the former USSR, there were started the developments of multifunctional additives and obtained high-performance additives such as БФК, БФКу, ИХП-21, ИХП-101 (ИХП – ICA in Russian) and СБ-3у and created a number of high-quality motor oils based on Baku and Eastern oils by use of these additives.

A specialized "Plant of Additives" was launched in the city of Sumgayit for the production of additives created by ICA.

Multifunctional polymeric additives of thiophosphinate (ИХП-388) and sulfonate (ИХП-234) types have been obtained and applied on a pilot-industrial scale, and on their basis high-performance motor and hydraulic oils have been developed.

There has been developed high-performance anti-wear additive of dithiocarbamate type ИХП-14A,  organized its production on a pilot-industrial scale in Yaroslavl, obtained TAD-17 transmission oil on its basis. Permission has been obtained for the use of this oil in passenger cars, including the Zhiguli car, which is a model of the Fiat company and manufactured in Russia, and trucks. On the basis of ИХП -14A additive there has also been developed and admitted for application BPM- ИХП -1201 reducer oil providing the normal operation of conventional pumping units of the oil field equipment.

A number of additives providing production of motor, transmission and industrial oils were developed by the ICA team and their industrial production was  organized in Azerbaijan (Baku, Sumgayit), Russia (Ufa, Perm, Yaroslavl, Novo-Kuybishevsk), Ukraine (Shostka, Kharkov) and Belarus Republic (Novopolotsk). Under the former USSR all motor oils produced at Azerneftyagh Oil Refinery were used with the additive compositions created by the ICA.

Lubricating oils (M-16ИХП-3, TAD-17ИХП) which provided the normal performance of some special purpose engines and transmission systems, produced in the former Soviet Union, were created by the ICA on the basis of additives developed at the Institute and applied in industry.

As a result of synthesis of effective additives to special purpose synthetic oils working at high temperature (over 220°С) and research conducted in the field of creation of high-quality synthetic oil compositions on their basis, for engines of special purpose jet airplanes there was developed synthetic oil providing operation of jet engines for special purposes at a temperature of 2400C.

ИХП-712 additive which effectively improves antioxidant properties of the jet fuels has been developed and its tests have been successfully passed.

The first antismoke additive in the former USSR – ИХП-706 has been developed and admitted for applying. Use of ИХП-706 additive in diesel fuels allows to reduce  smoke and carcinogenic substances in exhaust gases by 50 %.

НСК-5у cutting fluid and five variants of Азерол series, which are applied at various machine-building plants of the country in a process of diamond cutting and metal processing, have been developed.

There have been developed and applied in industry highly effective antimicrobial additives such as Азин-1, Азин-2, Азин-3 and Азин-4, protecting cutting fluids and oil products from bio deterioration.

To prevent corrosion of oil-field equipment, and to protect the freezing system of the engine from damaging as a result of cavitation, there have  been  created corrosion inhibitors (ИКИПГ, ИКАНАЗ and others), developed their technology for obtaining and organized pilot-industrial production.

In the former USSR, 20% of all additives and lubricating oils, including special-purpose oils, were created at the ICA.

Today, the ICA retains its former importance. Although the institute is one of the three scientific centers of the Soviet Union in the field of chemistry of additives, today it is the only specialized scientific institution that continues its activities on a scientific basis on the territory of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

During the first years of sovereignty of our country, when there was a huge situation in the field of additives and lubricating materials, to meet the republic’s needs for various kinds of lubricating oils in the shortest time on the basis of Baku base oils and additives developed at the ICA and produced at the industrial scale, as well as foreign ones, there were created a number of motor oils for various diesel engines (including special purpose ones), transmission oils for various vehicles, production of which was organized at the industrial and pilot-industrial scale. For example, new motor oils which are analogues of M-10В2, M-10Г2, M-14Г2, M-14В2, M-14ГБ oils and M-16ИХП-3 special purpose oils, motor and transmission oils created like foreign analogues providing exploitation of buses and micro-buses brought from abroad.

A new analogue of M-14ГБ motor oil brought from abroad and used in Oil and Gas Production Unit of SOCAR has been developed by the Institute and its production has been organized at the “Ashgar” Special Technological Bureau with Experimental Production under the ICA (Ashgar STB with EP).

New cutting fluid used at Baku Domestic Air Conditioners Plant instead of Japanese one used earlier has been developed.

AzК-18 conservation oil created at the Institute is widely used at “Baku Pillow Plant” OJSC to protect pillows from corrosion.

To provide the Republic’s needs for various lubricating oils meeting modern requirements a number of lubricating compositions for various purpose (including special) for motor, transmission and hydraulic systems have been created and their technical conditions have been developed.

Manufacture of the created lubricating compositions has been organized at the Experimental-Industrial Plant (EIP) of High-Tech Park. Currently, the plant produced lubricating oils are being used in a number of enterprises of the Republic. Appropriate tests of a number of special-purpose oils developed for the Ministry of Defense of the Republic are conducted.

Waste oil regeneration technology, used in the Republic in various types of technique, including internal combustion engines causing environmental tensions, has been developed and tested at the Experimental-Industrial Plant.

On the base of the regenerated oils and corresponding additives, various purposes lubricating compositions for diesel engines, including special ones have been created. In view of strategic importance the created lubricating composition has protected with Secret patent of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The Institute of Chemistry of Additives has created a new, higher-quality analogue of special-purpose motor oil, organized its production at the Experimental Industrial Plant, and presented tons of products to the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan. That oil was also used in the Karabakh War. It should be noted that the process of creating special-purpose lubricants consists of several stages: selection of base oils and the appropriate additive package on scientific grounds, determination of the optimal composition of the lubricant composition as a result of laboratory tests, bench tests on a number of engines, and finally, tests on a real engine.

Since Azerbaijan does not have the necessary engines to carry out bench tests of special-purpose lubricants, this process was carried out in Ukraine at the appropriate special-purpose enterprise and was proposed for use in the latest generation of special-purpose diesel engines. The created special purpose motor oil was protected by the Secret patent of Azerbaijan and tested with positive results in real equipment at the Test-Experiment Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Azerbaijan and considered suitable for use in the engines of special purpose equipment. In addition to the special purpose organization of Ukraine, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Pakistan is also very interested in this motor oil.
