Establishment history

2003

Basic activity directions  The main scientific directions of institute are inventory and passportization, collection, introduction, restoration, reproduction, evaluation according to the international descriptors of the cultivated plants and their wild ancestors, valuable, rare, threatened and endangered genus, species, aborigine varieties and forms, the local breeds of agricultural animals; study of scientific issues related to ex situ and in situ conservation; research on revealing resistant, high productive accessions with high quality and involving them into breeding; creation of new varieties and breeds and coordination of the activities of the different institutions in relevant fields.
Main scientific achievements  1. During scientific expeditions to 20 botanical and geographical regions of Azerbaijan seeds from 7000 plant accessions belonged to 400 species of cultivated plants and their wild relatives were collected, passportizated, resistance to biotic and abiotic stress factors was evaluated, their ex-situ and in-situ conservation was provided and National DataBase on plant genetic resources was created.

2. In cereal and legume plant accessions the possibility of regaining (restovration) of germination ability and genetic integrity lost as a result of long term conservation in genebank using the ozone-air mixture and the stimulating effect of this mixture to the plant development, product quality and ecological safety was determined.

3. With the purchase of a new type wheat forms with branched spikes the role of remote hydridization in enrichment of

genetic diversity has been proven experimentally.

4. For the first time, in bread wheat botanical varieties (T. aestivum v. erythrospermum, T. aestivum v. albidum, T. aestivum v. meridionale, T. aestivum v. lutescens) and varieties (Akinchi 84, Guneshli, Mirbeshir 128) of Azerbaijan origin genes (Yr18/Lr34) providing resistance to yellow and brown rust and major gene (Sr31) providing resistance to stem rust were identified.

5. In grains of F2 hybrids of tetraploid wheat species, as well as of durum wheat varieties and accessions more than 50 allele component blocks of gliadincoding Gli 1A, Gli 1B, Gli 6A and Gli 6B loci localized in short arms of 1A, 1B, 6A and 6B homologous chromosomes and 2 allele component blocks of glutenincoding Gul 1A and Gul 1B loci localized in long arms of 1A and 1B homologous chromosomes were identified.

6. It was determined that the resistance of plants to stress factors was due to the reconstruction of cell genetic systems and further acceleration of expression of some genes. In nucleus of drought and salinity tolerant plant genotypes under the stress condition DNA fractions, especially the amount of euchromatin DNA increases leading to the intensification of RNA synthesis. This shows the increase of physiological lability and functional activity of genetic apparatus.

7. For the first time in Azerbaijan in cultivated and wild species of legume plants Beet western yellows virus

(BWYV), Bean leafroll virus (BLRV), Chickpea chlorotic stunt virus (CpCSV), Faba bean necrotic yellows virus (FBNYV), Pea seed-borne mosaic virus (PSbMV) viruses were identified and sequenced. In chickpea, lentil and faba bean accessions new isolits (chickpea -HQ180352; lentil - HQ180353; chickpea - HQ199306; chickpea -180354; chickpea - 199305; lentil -GQ351600; faba bean - GQ371215) were determined and registered in international genebank.

8. Detection of three out of four (AAA, ATT, GTA və ATA) haplotypes belonged to South Caucasus in local wild grape accessions of Azerbaijan it was once again proven that Azerbaijan was one of the origin and cultivation centers for this plant. 54 local aborigen grape varieites were described using modern ampelographic methods and published in book named “Ampelography of Caucasus and Northern Black Sea Region” (“VITIS”, Germany, 2012, 485 p.)

9. By studying higher plants of Azerbaijan flora and their wild relatives with modern florogenetic, ecological and botanical methods 928 species (51 families and 242 genera) were included into new volume of “Azerbaijan flora”. As a result of this study monographs named “Higher plants of Azerbaijan” (3 volumes) (Science, 2005-2008) and ‘”A concept of Azerbaijan flora” (Science, 2011) have been published.
