Establishment history

On February 27, 2014, by the Decree No 8/19 of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, according to the reforms carried out at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, it was decided to establish the Institute of the History of Science within the Division of the Social Sciences in order to further development of the science in Azerbaijan along with  enhancing its integration into the World Science and strengthening of the  interdisciplinary studies.

In accordance with the Decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 363 dated November 17, 2015 “On approval of the structure and number of employees of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences”, the Institute of the History of Science has been established within the structure of ANAS, and the structure of the Institute of the History of Science of ANAS was approved by the Decree No. 8/3 dated 25 May 2016.

Main scientific achievements 

The Institute of the History of Science of ANAS, which has been operating since 2016, has achieved many successes in a short period of time and has received recognition in the national and world professional community.

The Institute conducts large-scale research aimed at highlighting the main events in the development of domestic natural science, technology and technology, first of all, recreating the history of fundamental discoveries and inventions, biographies of prominent figures in science and technology, establishing the pattern of development of the natural science of technical sciences, engineering activities in the context of the history of Azerbaijan science. Scientific research of the institute is based on the fundamental base of manuscripts and documentary sources.

The Institute of the History of Science has established active ties with many foreign scientific institutions. A number of agreements on scientific cooperation were signed with the relevant institutes: in 2016, with the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology. S.I. Vavilov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of the History of Science. G.M. Dobrov of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 2017 with the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences, as well as with the Italian Museum of the History of Science. Galileo Galilei (Florence), and with the Institute of World History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and in 2019 the corresponding agreement was signed with the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. In 2019, the institute was also accepted as an associate member of the International Union for the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology ( IUHPS ). In 2022, a memorandum of cooperation was signed for 2022-2027 between the Institute of the History of Science and the Institute of Oriental Studies. R.B. Suleimanov of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Also this year, an agreement on cooperation for 2022-2027 was signed between the Institute of the History of Science and Tyumen State University.

One of the great successes achieved by the Institute was the holding of two International Scientific Conferences dedicated to the history of science and science of science , in which prominent scientists from Russia, Ukraine, China, Kazakhstan, Germany and other countries took part. In 2016-2022, the Institute organized 3 international conferences, 2 international scientific seminars, 5 republican-level conferences, 10 scientific seminars, including more than 100 events dedicated to various topics. The staff of the institute took part in more than 50 international and local conferences. From 2016 to the present, the Institute staff has published 52 books, 190 articles and abstracts in domestic journals, 66 articles in international scientific journals included in indexed and reference databases, 2 textbooks. At the same time, materials of the I and II international scientific conferences "History of Science and Science of Science : Interdisciplinary Research" organized by the Institute of the History of Science were published in the form of a book. For participation in international and local events and effective activities, the employees of the Institute were awarded orders and medals, diplomas and letters of thanks. The General Director of the Institute, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Maryam Seyidbayli was awarded a badge of honor and a diploma from the Institute of the History of Natural Science and Technology named after. S.I. Vavilov of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RIA) "For contribution to the history of science and technology", and at the same time for the effective and successful activities of the institute with the medal of the 100th anniversary of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, as well as the medal "100th anniversary of the Baku State University (1919- 2019 )" of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

One of the important innovations of the Institute of the History of Science in 2020 is the release of the international scientific journal "History of Science and Science Studies ", officially registered by the Presidium of ANAS and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and indexing the base of scientific publications in the category "History and Archeology" and obtaining an official contract with " Advanced Sciences Index » Germany. The scientific collection is one of the first indexed publications of Azerbaijan in the field of humanities and social sciences. In addition, the Institute of the History of Science publishes another journal of scientific research called “Sociology. Social Psychology. Politics". For the first time in the historiography of Azerbaijan, the Institute of the History of Science published a two-volume book titled "Academic Collection of Documents: Decisions, Protocols, Correspondences (1920-1991)", dedicated to the history of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. Among the books published by the Institute of the History of Science: "Essays on the history of geography, physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy”; "Elite of Azerbaijan: history, real situation and prospects", "Scientific diaspora of Azerbaijan", "Presidents of ANAS", "Ideology of Azerbaijanism: traditions and modernity", "Sources and historiography of the history of medicine in Azerbaijan", " Luminaries of Azerbaijani medical science", "The book of Dede Gorgud and its Turkmen desert copy" (transliteration, photo facsimile, notes and comments), "History of Baku State University", "Public state in Azerbaijan: development, prospects", "Science and culture in Azerbaijan in the XIII-XIV centuries (based on Persian-language sources)”, “ Brain drain and Azerbaijan, scientific and sociological analysis”, “Economic history and historians of Azerbaijan (XX century)” , etc.

In 2021, the Institute of the History of Science published a collection of articles titled "Actual Problems in the History of Karabakh" as part of the relevant program of activities approved by Resolution No. 2/4 of the Presidium of ANAS dated January 12, 2021. Within the framework of the “Year of Nizami”, an international online conference on the topic “Online dialogue of cultures and the philosophical heritage of Nizami” and a scientific seminar on the topic “Nizami Ganjavi’s legacy in the scientific history of Azerbaijan” were held.

One of the important works of the Institute of the History of Science in 2021 was the book by the Director General of the Institute, Professor Maryam Seyidbayli , “Handwritten heritage of the Azerbaijani scientist Nasir ad-Din at-Tusi ”, published in the city of St. Petersburg, Russian Federation. The book discusses the main stages of the life and work of the great Azerbaijani scientist Nasir al-Din at-Tusi, and also includes a translation of the manuscripts of " Risal at-Tibb " (Treatise on Medicine) from Arabic and Persian.

This year, the Institute of the History of Science has carried out important research in a number of scientific areas. The Institute held a practical international scientific seminar "Day of Science - International Scientific Cooperation" together with the Nizhny Novgorod State University named after N.I. Lobachevsky and Nizhny Novgorod Pedagogical University named after Kuzma Minina. Also, as part of the announcement of 2022 as the “Year of Shusha”, together with the State Committee for Work with the Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the book “Outstanding Personalities of Shusha in the History of Azerbaijani Migration” was published. The presentation of the book was held in the city of Shusha at the 5th Congress of World Azerbaijanis.

At the same time, on May 6, 2022, an international scientific conference was organized dedicated to the 270th anniversary of the city of Shusha on the topic "The center of science and culture of Azerbaijan - the city of Shusha." Research into the life and work of prominent figures in Shusha continues.

Another important research paper was published this year. In the co-authorship of the Director General of the Institute, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Maryam Seyidbayli and the Director of the National Cancer Center, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Academician Jamil Aliyev, a monograph entitled "History of Medical Science in Azerbaijan" was published. The monograph is devoted to the study of the development of medical science in Azerbaijan from ancient times to the present day.
