Within the framework of “Cultural Capital of the CIS-2025” events, organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Special Representative Office of the President in the Lachin district, a roundtable on the topic “Natural Resources of Karabakh” was held in Lachin city.
The event was moderated by the President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Academician Isa Habibbeyli.
In addition to Azerbaijani scholars, scientists from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Russia also participated in the roundtable.
During his opening speech, the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli emphasized that as a result of the 44-day Patriotic War and anti-terror operations under the leadership of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief President Ilham Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity and state sovereignty was fully restored. Within the framework of the “Great Return” State Program, large-scale constructive works are underway in the territories liberated from occupation, and at the same time, Azerbaijani science has resumed its research in the region after 30 years. According to the head of ANAS, information that was impossible to obtain during the 30-year occupation of Karabakh is now systematically gathered, researched, and scientifically substantiated.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli informed the participants about the natural and economic potential of Karabakh and East Zangezur and expressed his deep gratitude to the Head of the country for the special attention and care given to this region, which is undergoing a new development phase.
The Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Professor Abdurazak Mirzoyev delivered a speech in which he provided detailed information about the natural resources of the country he represents and presented his proposals for the development of scientific relations with Azerbaijan.
Corresponding member of ANAS Talat Kengerli gave a detailed presentation on the structure, topics, scope, and numerous maps of the “Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur: Atlas of Natural Resources,” published in Azerbaijani, English, and Russian, prepared through the joint cooperation of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics (leading organization), the Ministry of Science and Education, scientific institutions of ANAS, and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
PhD in Geography, Associate Professor Zaur Imrani delivered a presentation titled “The Tourism and Recreation Potential of Karabakh”. He provided information about natural monuments, their features, evaluation criteria, and ways of registering these monuments. Zaur Imrani spoke about the geological, geomorphological, hydrological, floristic, and faunistic monuments of Karabakh, specially protected areas and their significance for tourism. He showed examples of tourist routes that can be created based on the natural monuments. At the end of his presentation, he introduced a 1:100,000 scale map reflecting the tourism and recreation potential of Karabakh.
Associate Professor Saida Zeynalova, PhD in Geography presented a report titled “The Dynamics of Modern Landscapes of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur.” The aim of her research was to identify the patterns of differentiation in modern landscape complexes and to assess the ecological conditions of the studied region. A map of the ecological framework of Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur was also presented. This map shows the core zones of the ecological framework, ecological corridors, and buffer zones within the areas studied.
The event also featured presentations by Professor Irina Natina, leading scientist at the Russian Academy of Sciences Geological Institute, Ali Aliyev, employee of the Azerbaijani Geological Exploration Agency, Professor Vagif Mammadov, head of the Department at the Institute of Geology and Geophysics and Professor Emil Bayramov from Kazakhstan, who provided detailed information on the region’s natural resources, landscape features, water studies, and other valuable scientific research and prospects.
During the roundtable, the expansion of scientific cooperation between various countries and the development of joint approaches to global challenges in this field were discussed.
At the end of the event, Academician Isa Habibbeyli delivered the closing speech, emphasizing the scientific significance of the event and highlighting that it opened up new opportunities for further research.
“Karabakh and Eastern Zangezur: Atlas of Natural Resources,” was presented as a gift to Professor Abdurazak Mirzoyev, Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, Professor Emil Bayramov from Kazakhstan, and Sevinj Abbasova, Director of Secondary School No. 2 in Lachin.
