Leilatepe culture in the Near East - Caucasus Chalcolithic era

1. Tens of Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age archaeological monuments covering VII-II millennia were excavated, investigated and numerous monuments were discovered by him in Ganja-Gazakh, Nakhchivan, Gabala and other regions of Azerbaijan. For the first time, as a result of excavations carried out in the Neolithic Hasansu settlement (Aghstafa district), artifacts related to the origin of the Shomutepe archaeological culture which were not known to science before were discovered, and the local roots of this culture were clarified.

2. Large-scale archaeological excavations were carried out by him on the monuments of the Chalcolithic Leilatepe archaeological culture (Beyuk Kesik, Poylu, Galayeri settlements, Soyuqbulag kurgans etc.) in Ganja-Gazakh region and Gabala district, and were identified the main characteristic features, origins and spreading area of this culture. For the first time having discovered the Soyuqbulag kurgans (Agstafa region) he carried out archaeological excavations and proved that Leilatepe culture had kurgan-type burial customs and these were the oldest kurgans in the South Caucasus. Through these studies he substantiated the origination of Maikop archaeological culture of the North Caucasus on the basis of Leilatepe culture traditions and the existence of the Leilatepe-Maikop Cultural and Historical Unity in the first half of the 4th millennium.

3. At the complex of Gamigaya monuments (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Ordubad region) dated to the end of the 4th millennium B.C up to the Bronze Age he recorded more than a thousand rock paintings and analyzed them on the basis of Azerbaijan and the Near East parallels, and identified the importance of these monuments in studying the history of material-spiritual culture and the economic and cultural ties of Azerbaijan in Bronze Age.

4. He investigated kurgans and soil graves in Ganja-Gazakh region and Gabala district, related to the early Bronze Age (the end of the 4th – 3rd millennia B.C) Kur-Araz Cultural and Historical Unity, and suggested the idea about the existence of early Bronze Age Eastern Caucasus archaeological culture within this Unity covering Shirvan and South Dagestan.

5. Archaeological excavations were carried out in more than 200 graves of the Khojaly-Gedebey culture (second half of the 2nd – 1st millennia BC) and in several settlements in the western region of Azerbaijan, and thousands of examples of material culture related to the craftsmanship of the period, economic life, burial customs and the international relations were revealed.

6. In the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age grave monuments many paleoanthropological materials were discovered by him. At the same time, in the archaeological context, he also investigated the history of the spiritual culture, early statehood and the ethnogenesis of the ancient Azerbaijani population.
