Koichiro Matsuura was born in Tokyo, on September 29, 1937.
He graduated from Faculty of Law of the University of Tokyo in 1959, while from the Economics Faculty of Haverford College in Pennsylvania, USA in 1961. Acting as a diplomat, Koichiro Matsuura served as Japan’s deputy foreign minister in 1992-1994. He has been defined Director-General of UNESCO on October 20, 1999, being ninth head of UNESCO Mr. K.Maatsura was the first representative of the Asian countries, who appointed to this position. K.Matsuura has been re-elected to the post of Director-General of UNESCO on October 12, 2005 for a period of 4 years. On June 10, 2008, was elected Honorary Doctor of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia for his contribution to the strengthening of international cooperation and relations with the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. On April 23, 2001, K.Matsuura was awarded the degree "Great Cross of the Knight" of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas for the efficient activities. Since 2003, he is an Honorary Doctor at Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov. On July 19, 2006 was awarded the Order "Polar Star". In 2002, was deserved to the international prize "Dialogue of Civilizations". In addition, is a Foreign Honorary Member of the Russian Academy of Arts. K.Matsuura was elected Foreign Member of ANAS on May 12, 2008. |
