Albert Nikiforovitch Tavkhelidze was born on December 16, 1932 in Tbilisi, Georgia. In 1953 he graduated in theoretical physics from the Tbilisi State University. In 1956 he was invited by Academicians N.N.Bogolyubov and A.A.Logunov to work as a researcher at the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics of the United Institute of Nuclear Research of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Dubna, Russia. He was working at the Institute since 1956 till 1970. Having started as research scientist he went through to position of the Deputy Director of the Laboratory of Theoretical Physics. He received his Doctor of Physics and Mathematical Sciences degree in 1963. In 1965 he received his professorship. He continues his collaboration with the Institute at present taking positions of a Chief of Department of Theoretical Physics and Scientific Adviser to the Institute. In 1970-1986 A.N. Tavkhelidze was a Professor at the Moscow State University named after M.V.Lomonosov. In 1967 he was elected as a Correspondent Member and in 1974 as an Active Member (Academician) of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. In 1986 he was elected as a President of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia. He was re-elected as a President of the Academy in 1993 and 1998 respectively. He continues holding this post at present. Since 1986 till present he has been editor-in-chief of “Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of Georgia” journal. A.N.Tavkhelidze has been the author of more than two hundred scientific publications. For his outstanding contribution in development of science he was elected a Correspondent Member of the Academy of Sciences of USSR in 1984. In 1990 he was elected as an Active Member (Academician) of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In 2002 he was elected as an Honoured Member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. |
