Basic activity directions   Study of vertebrate and invertebrate animals belonging to the biodiversity of the fauna of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic  and identifying ways of their use
Main scientific achievements

Preference was given to the study of specific pathogens - sarcosporidiosis that parasitize farm animals and poultry in the conditions of Nakhchivan AR. The fauna composition of sarcosporidiosis (9 species), potential pest species, their level of virulence in different environments, duration of the sporulation stage and ecological characteristics were studied. Sarcosystis horvathi was first shown to the primitive fauna of the South Caucasus republics. Extensiveness and intensity of invasions in infected animals were assessed. Monographs and guidelines on effective control measures for sarcosporidiosis and their prevention have been published. With the use of modern methods investigated species composition of macrozoobenthos of the Nakhchivan (Araz) water reservoir, quantitative indicators, formed their food supply, calorie zoobenthos and the value of its feed rate, evaluate the role of benthic fauna species of fish in the diet benthophage and biological self-purification of water and soil. Currently being studied benthic fauna of the rivers that form the basis of drinking water in the Autonomous Republic, established its main taxonomic groups and biocoenoses on the territory of the high-altitude zones. So far, more than 600 species of macrobentic invertebrates have been found in the region's hydrofauna. For the first time in the territory of the Autonomous Republic, the fauna of bees (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) was studied in detail. 335 species of bees, belonging to 53 genus and 7 families found for the fauna of the region. 335 species of bees, belonging to 53 genus and 7 families found for the fauna of the region. Anthophoridae (89 species or 26.6%) and Andrenidae (66 species or 19.7%) predominated in terms of the number of species. It has been established that bees predominate in the flora of the region, distinguished by their richness - Rosaceae, Fabaceae, Apiaceae, Lamiaceae and others. Currently, the species diversity of spiders (Arachnoidea, Aranea), one of the indispensable elements of natural complexes, is being studied by region. Metellina mengei (Blackwall, 1870) was first shown to Azerbaijani fauna.

The latest literature and modern research methods on rural research have been selected and collected. The species of the horsefly were determined by their main taxons.

It was found 7 Important Bird Areas of particular importance for the protection of the avifauna of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The avifauna of the region is represented by 241 species and 167 subspecies, 141 genus, 51 families and 18 orders. For the first time in the fauna of the Autonomous Republic and Azerbaijan, a lot of new taxons have been shown. Currently, we investigate in detail the fauna of terrestrial vertebrates. The lizard-Dorevskia unisexualis species was first mentioned for the fauna of Azerbaijan. The first establishes the types of vertebrates, with special conservation status, defined by their main categories (CR, EN, VU, NT, DD). The existence of leopard families on the south-eastern slopes of the Zangazur mountain range has been proven by high-quality photographs and videos. New scientific results have been obtained on the current state of the Asian moufflon and bezoar goat populations.

A comparative study and analysis of the biological and economic characteristics of Balbas sheep, which are considered typical for the livestock of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and are widely fed in all ecological zones, is being carried out.

The species composition of the amphibians (Amphibia) distributed in Nakhchivan AR, bioecological features of the species, regularities of their distribution on territorial and altitude zones and biotope affiliation are determined.

Employees of the department participated in prestigious international scientific conferences and symposiums held in our country and many foreign countries (Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Russian Federation, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic, Poland, India, etc.) and were active members of many international expeditions. One out of every two articles published by zoologists has been published in Russian, Turkish or English abroad, The geography of publications is quite wide, covering Asian, European and American countries. Monographs, a large number of books, methodological aids and booklets were published by the staff.
