Azerbaijan’s state language and mother-tongue policy, founded by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, is being successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev.
Academic Isa Habibbayli, President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), stated this during his speech at the conference on “The Development Strategy of the Azerbaijani Language as the State Language: Current Situation and Prospects,” held in parliament on December 8.
The academic noted that the President’s remarks on our mother tongue and state language, voiced in his remarkable address at ANAS’s anniversary meeting, highlight issues of major concern to different layers of society and to our people as a whole. He added that these remarks also assign important responsibilities to academic institutions and educational establishments working in this field. According to Isa Habibbayli, the Head of State’s statement that “if we do not protect our language and keep it clean and pure, we may gradually lose it” shows how crucial and sensitive the matter is.
The ANAS President stressed that in his speech, President Ilham Aliyev evaluated the introduction of foreign words into the Azerbaijani language—other than internationally accepted unified terminology in global lexicons—as “either an error, a provocation, or simply unacceptable.” In the academic’s view, this position is a clear call for Azerbaijani scholars, researchers, teachers, and intellectuals to safeguard the language.
Isa Habibbayli added that modern developed languages enrich themselves not only by adopting international terms but also by drawing on their internal linguistic resources.
