A conference dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the birth of prominent linguist, Honored Scientist, Presidential Scholarship holder, Doctor of Philology, Professor Jafar Jafarov was held at the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).
Opening the event, President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, spoke about the professor’s rich scientific legacy, noting that Jafar Jafarov is one of the figures who established a distinctive school in Azerbaijani linguistics.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli stated that the scholar conducted in-depth research on the Azerbaijani language in comparison with world languages and in unity with the achievements of general linguistics. He noted that while the external aspect of the scholar’s research reflects rigorous, comprehensive, and fundamental scientific principles, its inner essence is grounded in an unwavering ideology of Azerbaijanism, patriotism, and national identity. He подчеркнул that the scholar’s research activity and his firm commitment to Azerbaijanism fully shaped his personality and intellectual image.
Sharing his memories, Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that as one of Professor Jafar’s former students, he remembered his strong adherence to objectivity, scientific precision, and his caring attitude, which left a lasting impression on his students.
Director of the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of ANAS, Professor Nadir Mammadli, spoke about the new horizons opened by Professor Jafar Jafarov in Azerbaijani linguistics. He noted that a number of the scholar’s fundamental works—such as the monographs “Transitional Processes in Parts of Speech,” “Means of Expressing Negation in the Modern Azerbaijani Literary Language,” and “Transitional Processes and Conversion in Parts of Speech,” as well as textbooks like “Morphology of the Modern Azerbaijani Language”—are invaluable sources for the field.
Member of Parliament, writer, and professor Alibala Maharramzade, speaking next, highlighted the scholar’s exceptional contributions as a great educator to the upbringing of the younger generation. He noted that Professor Jafar Jafarov made significant contributions to the development of Azerbaijani philology and played a vital role in shaping young researchers.
At the conference, Doctor of Philology Baba Maharramli, in his report titled “Scientific and Pedagogical Activity of Jafar Jafarov,” emphasized that the scholar’s scientific creativity and pedagogical mastery formed a unified whole, noting that the professor established new standards in teaching linguistics by combining theory with practice.
Professor Sayala Sadiqova, speaking on “Current Problems of Morphology in the Works of Jafar Jafarov,” stated that the scholar’s research introduced a new perspective to modern linguistics.
At the jubilee event, Professor Ilham Tahirov presented a report on “The Process of Transition in Parts of Speech in Jafar Jafarov’s Works,” and Professor Ismayil Kazimov spoke on “Syntactic Research in Jafar Jafarov’s Works.” It was noted that Jafar Jafarov conducted research across various areas of Azerbaijani linguistics and, alongside his pedagogical activity, studied many important scientific problems of the native language. Distinguished by his rich and comprehensive scholarly erudition, the scientist explored various theoretical issues of philology.
Dean of the Faculty of Philology of Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Associate Professor Konul Hasanova, Professor Zahid Jafarov of Baku State University, and other prominent scholars also delivered remarks, sharing their thoughts on Professor Jafar Jafarov’s personal qualities and rich creative path.
At the end of the event, Professor Jafar Jafarov was awarded an Honorary Diploma for his contributions to the development of Azerbaijani linguistics.
