Main scientific achievements

- Yagub Mahmudov was the first historian to disclose Azerbaijan’s vast diplomatic relations with European countries in 15-17th centuries as well as names of Azerbaijani diplomats who held talks with European countries.

- In 2003, the textbook "Ata yurdu" ("Fatherland") prepared by him was selected as "Textbook of the Year" for its new scientific perspective on the history of Azerbaijan and for opening a successful page in textbook culture.

- "Encyclopedia of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic" edited by Yagub Mahmudov (in 2 volumes, Baku, 2004-2005) is the first fundamental scientific work covering all areas of the ADR’s history.

- In the book "Garabagh: real history, facts, documents" (in 7 languages) co-authored by him, the history of Garabagh was interpreted for the first time in its entirety - from the earliest times to the present day based on irrefutable documents and photographs.

- The special content of the first "Historical Atlas of Azerbaijan" (Baku, 2007) was developed under the guidance and editing of Yagub Mahmudov.

- Under his supervision, the "Azerbaijani history in the first sources" project was realized and tens of thousands of archival documents from Turkey, Russia, Georgia, France, Great Britain, Germany, India and other countries were brought to the country.

- The two-volume "Heydar Aliyev" (Baku, 2013), co-authored by the historian, is the first initiative to investigate the statehood activities of the Great Leader Heydar Aliyev at the academic level.

- The two-volume "History of the Republic of Azerbaijan" (Baku, 2016), co-authored by him, is the first initiative to study the history of the period of independence of Azerbaijan at an academic level.

- The atlas "Azerbaijan on historical maps" (Baku, 2022), edited and published by Yagub Mahmudov, is the first fundamental atlas on the history of Azerbaijan.

- He established scientific schools in the field of history of diplomacy, the lost lands, and the history of genocides.

Pedagogical activity

Yagub Mahmudov worked as senior lecturer and Associate Professor at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute (now ASPU) in 1968-1981, and as an Associate Professor, head of department, deputy dean and dean at the Faculty of History of BSU in 1981-2004. He has been serving as head of the Department of History of the Ancient World and Middle Ages at the Faculty of History of BSU since 1991, and the formation of the department is connected with his name.

He took an active part in the establishment of the new education system in Azerbaijan, including drafting and improving university admission programs, creating test banks and developing methodical aids on some disciplines. In 1991, under his leadership, the first "History of Azerbaijan" program for secondary schools was published. In 1991-1992, he led the expert working group, which developed the Education Concept and the Education Law. The creation of the first "History of Azerbaijan" and "History of the Middle Ages" textbooks (for secondary schools) of the country’s independence period is also associated with the name of the historian.

Other activities

Yagub Mahmudov worked as a scientific editor, a senior scientific editor, chief of editorial office and deputy editor-in-chief on scientific issues at the Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan in 1966-1975, as the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Attestation Commission under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan (now the Supreme Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan) and Director General of the Polygraphic Union of Publishing House of "Azerbaijan Encyclopedia" in 1992-1993, and as the Director of the Institute of History and Ethnology of ANAS in 2004-2021.

He was a member of the Political Council of the New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) and addressed the 1st and 3rd congresses of the YAP. In 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015, he was elected to the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Azerbaijan. He was Heydar Aliyev’s and then Ilham Aliyev’s advocate in the presidential elections, and accompanied them during several official state visits. He is a member of the YAP Veterans Council.
