Gurbanov Afad Mammad oglu

A corresponding member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Afad Mammad oglu Gurbanov, was born on January 10, 1929 in Gizil Shafag village of Ancient Borchali.

A.Gurbanov receives his secondary education in the villages of Gizil Shafag and Ilmazli. In 1945, at the age of 16, he was appointed as a director and a teacher of Azerbaijani language Gizil Shafag secondary school. He studied at the Georgian Institute of Teachers in 1946-1948 and graduated with a distinguished diploma.

In 1950, he entered the Pedagogical University of Azerbaijan and graduated with a distinguished diploma and became a deputy Dean of the Faculty of Philology and then Dean  and then head of the chair.

A.Gurbanov has been working as a rector of the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute (now Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University) in 1981-1989. He started working at the university in 1979 and worked at the Department of Azerbaijani linguistics at the end of his life. He was a member of Milli Mejlis in 1990-1994 and actively participated in the formation of modern alphabet.

He is the author of following works - "Linguistic System", "Linguistics History", "Modern Azerbaijani Literature Language", "Linguistic Analysis of Artistic Text", "Onomastics of Azerbaijan" , "Onomalogy of the Azerbaijani language", "General linguistics" (I-II volumes), "Language problems in the world" and others.

In 1981 he was honored scientist of Azerbaijan SSR. The outstanding scientist was awarded the State Prize of the Azerbaijan Republic for the monograph "Onomastics of the Azerbaijani language".

Correspondent member of ANAS Afad Gurbanov died on September 26, 2009 in Baku.
