Taghiyev Shamkhal was born on March 15, 1922 in Shahsevian, Beylagan district. Sh.Taghiyev graduated from the Biological Faculty of Moscow State University (1953). He defended the dissertation of the Doctor of Philosophy in Biological Sciences (1956) and the Doctor of Science (1970). He was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan SSR (1976) and a full member (1989).
He worked in such positions as deputy director for scientific work of the Institute of Physiology. A.I.Karaev of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (1970-1991), academician-secretary of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (1991-1996).
The main direction of scientific activity of Academician Sh.Taghiev is the area of evolutionary physiology, the role of the nervous system in the formation of conditioned reflexes in organisms of various structures. His scientific work was also aimed at achieving the results of the mechanisms of the sequence of complexity of analytically synthetic brain activity. The achievements of a scientist in determining the priority areas of physiological research in Azerbaijan are great.
He was one of the first representatives who carried out and planned research in our republic related to the search for phylogenetic and evolutionary aspects of the formation of physiological functions, which were among the most advanced ideas of the Azerbaijan School of Physiology of that period.
The main directions of scientific activity of academician Sh.Tagiyev was the field of evolutionary physiology, as well as the role of the nervous system in the formation of conditioned reflexes at different organizational levels and the results of the mechanisms of the sequential complexity of analytic-synthetic brain activity.
Sh.Taghiev was the author of 127 scientific papers and 3 monographs.
Under his leadership, 20 dissertations of PhDs were prepared and defended.
Sh.Taghiyev was awarded the honorary titles of "Honored Worker of Science", a scientist and public figure, as well as several government awards and honorary degrees. He was a member of the Great Patriotic War and was awarded numerous orders and medals.
Academician Shamkhal Taghiyev died on August 4, 2007 in Baku.
