Academician Yagub Mahmudov awarded the medal “Dostlug”

According to the Order of President Ilham Aliyev “On the 200th anniversary of the creation of German settlements in the South Caucasus”, international scientific conference “Following the Tracks of History” was held at the Institute of History of the Azerbaijan National Academy.

The conference is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the creation of German settlements in Azerbaijan.

The event was held by the Institute of History of ANAS and the German-Azerbaijani Society. Along with the historians of Azerbaijan, scientists from Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Uzbekistan and Germany presented their reports at the conference.

Initially, the participants of the event got acquainted with the exhibition of books of the Institute of History about the history of the creation of German settlements in Azerbaijan.

The conference was opened by the director of the Institute of History, academician Yagub Mahmudov, who spoke about the history of political and cultural ties between Azerbaijan and Europe, including Germany. The scientist gave detailed information on the works of foreign travelers who visited our country, German settlements created in the 19th century in the west of Azerbaijan and the activities of Siemens in Azerbaijan: “Institute of History delivered catalogs of documents relating to the history of Azerbaijan stored in the archives of Germany in the Bundesarchive of Berlin Political Archive of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Secret State Archive of the Prussian Cultural Heritage.”

Then, chairman of the German-Azerbaijani Society, Professor Chingiz Abdullayev in his speech said that the roots of ties between the Azerbaijani and German peoples are very deep: “In 1817-1818, German peasants from Württemberg, a region of Germany, were resettled to the Caucasus with the consent of Russian Tsar Alexander I in Georgia and Azerbaijan. A year later, Helenendorf was built (Helenendorf - today's Goygol city), known as the first German colony in our country.”

Chingiz Abdullayev awarded academician Yagub Mahmudov medal “Dostlug” by the German-Azerbaijani Society for his great contribution to the development of Azerbaijani-German scientific relations. Scientists Mais Amrahov and German scientist Oscar Walter were awarded the “Korpu” diploma of the society. In addition, Oscar Walter, by decision of the Scientific Council of the Institute of History, was elected an honorary doctor of the institution.

At the conference, researchers Oscar Walter, Sevinj Huseynova, Simon Kopadze and others said that the Germans' relocation to the South Caucasus and especially to North Azerbaijan contributed to the spread of European agricultural innovations in the region.

At the event, along with a photo exhibition reflecting the history of the creation of German settlements in Azerbaijan, a presentation of the book “Love of the Blue Eyes” by the writer Orkhan Aras and books “Germans in Azerbaijan: unknown pages ...” by scientists Chingiz Abdullayev, Abbas Seyidov and Hajar Verdiyeva was held.
