March 23 is World Meteorological Day

Today, rapid climate change is one of the most serious environmental problems facing mankind. Statistics collected over the last decade show that more than 80% of all natural disasters are of meteorological or hydrological origin.

Every year, March 23 is celebrated as World Meteorological Day by the World Meteorological Organization and its 192 member countries to draw attention to the field of meteorology.

It has become a tradition to celebrate this significant day every year under a slogan, which has been celebrated since 1961. The overall theme for 2020 has been chosen to highlight the unique role of climate and water information for the socio-economic sectors.

It should be noted that the World Meteorological Organization, established in Vienna in September 1873, is the predecessor of the International Meteorological Organization, one of the oldest international institutions, and since 1951 it has been a United Nations Special Agency.

Azerbaijan joined the Convention of the World Meteorological Organization by the decision of national leader Heydar Aliyev dated September 3, 1993. Our country, in compliance with all the requirements of this Convention, carries out international and regional exchange of information and implements the decisions taken by the organization.

Currently, the country's hydrometeorological network consists of 82 stations and 97 points.
