April 18 is celebrated in the world as the International Day of Monuments and Sites. This significant day was established in 1983 by UNESCO at the initiative of the International Council for the Protection of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) in order to draw public attention to the protection and preservation of world cultural heritage.
This day is celebrated in our republic. Every year on April 18, events are held in reserves, historical places, museums, exhibitions are organized, and an “Open Doors” day is announced.
However, this year in connection with the coronavirus pandemic in Azerbaijan, as in many countries of the world, a quarantine regime was introduced, and therefore the activities planned for the International Day of Monuments and Sites were postponed. Despite this, a video conference dedicated to this day was held under the chairmanship of the Minister of Culture Abulfas Garayev. At the same time, under the conditions of the quarantine regime, excursions to our historical monuments are organized via the Internet.
Annually, various events dedicated to this significant day are held by the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS. As a result of archaeological research that has been carried out in recent years, new monuments have been discovered and studied. Based on the results of these studies, which shed light on unknown pages of the history of our country, significant scientific works have been written, through which it was brought to the attention of the world scientific community that the rich cultural heritage of Azerbaijan has its roots in ancient times.
Currently, employees of the institute continue their research under the special quarantine regime. A closed group “Quarantine Archaeologists” was created on the Facebook social network, the purpose of which is to create business relationships to continue research.
In addition, on the occasion of the International Day of Monuments and Sites, the institute staff organized a video conference “Successes and Problems of the Archeology of Azerbaijan, Protection and Future Use of Historical Monuments”. The videoconference provides for discussion of issues such as achievements achieved in the country in the field of archeology, existing problems, measures that need to be taken in the future to popularize our monuments, etc.
