A group of doctors in Japan is preparing to begin clinical trials of a method for treating patients with coronavirus using blood plasma.
Doctors at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine received official approval from the center’s ethics committee on Thursday.
The method involves transfusion of blood plasma from patients who have had an infection and recovered.
Plasma contains antibodies that can give immunity to the virus.
There are reports of the successful use of this method for the treatment of severe patients in China.
Japanese doctors intend to take 400 milliliters of blood from about 50 recovered patients and transfuse it with 50 patients.
