The research team discovered nitrogen-containing organic material in a Martian meteorite. Since carbonate minerals usually precipitate from groundwater, this discovery suggests that 4 billion years ago, Mars was rich in organic matter, could be liveable, and favorable for the origin of life.

Despite the fact that recent studies of the rover have found convincing evidence of the existence of Martian organics, little is known about where it came from, how old it is, how widespread it is and how it has been preserved, and what its possible connection with biochemical activity is.
