The Indo-Australian lithosphere plate, located under the Indian Ocean, breaks into two parts. This is stated in a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. Scientists have been observing this process since 2012, when two powerful earthquakes occurred in the Indonesia region. According to scientists, the plate breaks at a speed of about 1.7 mm per year, that is, after a million years the fault depth will be 1.7 km. And by geological standards, this is far from super speed. For example, the Dead Sea fault in the Middle East is growing about twice as fast, and the San Andreas fault in California is growing 10 times. So the whole plate will crack in tens of millions of years.
