Scientists have noticed a green glow in the atmosphere of Mars. This phenomenon is caused by sunlight, which releases oxygen atoms from carbon dioxide. Astronomers say this is the first time such a glow has been seen not on Earth.
Since oxygen is abundant in the Earth’s atmosphere, a similar phenomenon can be observed over our planet from the International Space Station. This is the same effect that gives the auroras a green tint.
For the first time, scientists have suggested the existence of such a glow over Mars 40 years ago. And only now, thanks to the European Space Agency and Roskomos, astronomers were able to confirm this phenomenon using the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO).
