Hereditary diseases are studied in the Laboratory of Human Genetics of the Institute of Genetic Resources of ANAS. Leading researcher of the Institute, PhD in Biology Saltanat Agayeva is conducting research on muscular dystrophy Duchenne (Dushen), one of the research areas of hereditary diseases. Sharing her views on the study, Saltanat Agayeva stressed the need for clinical application of medical genetics. She said that more than 6,000 inherited diseases are known among humans, and more than 4,000 types of genetic diseases have been identified.

"The frequency of rare inherited diseases and clinical indicators are quite high in our country. According to our research, the majority of probands are children born from such marriages. "Muscular dystrophy is one of these diseases. It is found in one in every 3,000 to 3,500 boys and is hereditary," Agayeva said.
