Scientists at the University of Washington in Missouri were able to use the olfactory organs of the American Desert Locust, Schistocerca americana, to turn it into a sapper. To do this, they implanted electrodes into the antennae of the insect.
The olfactory receptor neurons in insect antennae are sensitive to odors. Each locust antenna contains approximately 50,000 neurons that send electrical signals to a part of the insect's brain known as the antenna lobe.
