Researchers in Singapore have found a new variant of Covid-19 that causes less serious infections, according to new research published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet.

According to experts, this could open up new opportunities for the development of vaccines and therapeutics.

The latest reported variant of the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19 emerged in Wuhan, China at the start of the pandemic and has been exported to Singapore and Taiwan. In Singapore, it was found in a cluster of cases in January and February. The researchers stated that patients infected with a variant with a 382 nucleotide deletion had better clinical outcomes compared to patients infected with viruses without this deletion.
