Today is International Literacy Day. The purpose of this significant day, celebrated by UNESCO since 1967, is to draw attention to the benefits of literacy for individuals, communities and society as a whole. Despite the progress made, the problem of literacy remains relevant, as at least 773 million elderly people in the world do not have basic literacy.

This year's theme for International Literacy Day is lifelong learning, drawing the public's attention to young and old.

Through a virtual conference in Paris on September 8, UNESCO will organize a global debate to re-evaluate teaching and learning among young people and adults in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the achievement of UN Sustainable Development Goal 4.

The International Literacy Award will also be presented online on this significant day.
