Institute of Geography continues palynological research

Institute of Geography of ANAS studies the geography of ancient times in the territory of Azerbaijan.

Under the leadership of Doctor of Geographical Sciences Yelena Tagiyeva, Paleogeography Department of the Institute together with the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of ANAS conducts research on the restoration of paleoecological and paleogeographic conditions of ancient human camps. Data obtained with the help of paleontological or spore-pollen analysis play a key role in solving many problems of ancient and medieval human paleoecology.

According to the scientist, palynological research has shown that climate change has directly affected the lifestyle and economic activity of the carriers of the Leylatapa culture living in the Karabakh plain of Azerbaijan. Thus, in wet periods, the camps were set up on hilly terrain, and in dry periods, in the immediate vicinity of rivers.

Employees of the department, together with specialists of the Institute of Botany, as well as Geology and Geophysics of ANAS, conduct comparative-palinomorphological research to systematize plants using the palynological method, which is a promising direction for a number of other fields of science.

The aim of the study is to identify new micromorphological features of pollen and to give "specie" status to some samples of Azerbaijani flora. An article about this was published in the prestigious journal “Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology” of the international publishing house Elsevier.
