Biologists have studied blind mice and found that these rodents live unusually long due to a lack of long-term "memory" in the immune system. This feature allows the immunity to be constantly updated and errors do not accumulate. The study was published in the journal “Nature Aging”.
According to the researchers, the data obtained show that traditional ideas about the functioning of the adaptive immune system in mammals are incomplete. According to most facts, the memory of immunity in blind mice is focused for a short time. This protects them from inflammation and autoimmune reactions.
Biologists believe that the length of life of different species is related to their typical body weight. For example, mice, rats, or small birds are relatively rare, while eagles, elephants, and large cats live for decades or even longer. Sometimes this pattern is violated. These include the very small "immortal" Cap blind mouse, as well as the "Spalax golani", “Spalax judaei” and "Spalax galili" species. These rodents live for twenty years and are even resistant to various cancerous tumors.
