Astronomers have discovered a giant exoplanet

Astronomers have observed direct light from a giant exoplanet from the VLT telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile. This exoplanet is located at a great distance from the Sun-like mother star. The new discovery has become a real mystery to scientists - none of the existing models of the formation of gas giants can explain how this exoplanet came into being where scientists see it. The study was published in the journal “Astronomy & Astrophysics”.

We are talking about the planet YSES 2b, located in the direction of the constellation of Flies in the Southern Hemisphere, 360 light-years from Earth. This gas giant is six times heavier than Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system. It is 110 times farther from its star than Earth and the Sun, or 20 times farther from Jupiter and the Sun. Its mother star resembles the Sun in all respects, but is significantly younger - only 14 million years old.

The planet and star were discovered during the “Young Suns Exoplanet Survey”.
