For the first time, experts from the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) obtained oxygen from the Martian atmosphere using a device mounted on the Perseverance rover.
This is stated in a statement by NASA.
Oxygen was obtained using a MOXIE device. It is noted that the total amount obtained is "about 5 grams" of oxygen, which can be enough for only one astronaut to breathe for about 10 minutes. It is estimated that MOXIE can receive up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour.
NASA said that in the future, this method will be useful during human flights to the planet, allowing it to "receive and store oxygen on Mars." In addition, in the future, such devices will be able to provide astronauts with air.
