200-year journey from Berlin to Baku

By the joint organizational support of the Baku International Center of Multiculturalism (BMTSM), Saxon State Library, Department of History of Azerbaijan Humboldt University and the Society of Oswald von Wolkenstein, was held a colloquium on "Tolerance in the epos" Kitabi-Dede Gorgud" as one of the literary source of multiculturalism”, in Dresden (Germany).

At the event with the participation of Azerbaijani and German scientists, representatives of local communities, guests were welcomed by State Counsellor of the Republic of Azerbaijan on International Affairs, multiculturalism and religion, Academician Kamal Abdullayev, an adviser to the Azerbaijani embassy in Germany Almaz Mammadov and director of the Saxon State Library, Professor Thomas Burgher.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Baku International Center of Multiculturalism Kamal Abdullayev opened the first panel, dubbed "Tolerance in the epos" Kitabi-Dede Gorgud", made a report on the long 200-year gorgud study way from Berlin to Baku. He stressed that it was exactly 200 years since the prominent German Orientalist and diplomat Heinrich Friedrich von Dietz the first time in 1815, translated into German chapter "Basat kills monster", whereby it has been recognized by the world. In this connection Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev signed decree dated February 20, 2015 on holding the 200th anniversary of the first translation and publication of "Kitabi-Dede Gorgud" in German. He noted that these orders of the President and the people of Azerbaijan are grateful to the outstanding German scientist.

Further, State Advisor donated the books composed of preface and a chapter of the epic "Kitabi Dede Gorgud", written by Heinrich Friedrich von Dietz, and published by Baku International Center of Multiculturalism in 25 languages, to the Saxon State Library (Dresden library).

Library Director Thomas Burger said that the identity of Dietz and the epos unites our people and culture, and expressed his gratitude to the Azerbaijani delegation for organizing such an event.

Speakers on the first panel Mainz University Professor Hendrix Boeschoten, rector of Baku Slavic University Professor Asif Hajiyev, Professor at the University of Chemnitz Christophe Fasbender and acting director of the Institute of Linguistics of ANAS Mohsun Nagisoylu told about the epos reflected in the examples of tolerance.

Speaking in the second panel on "Tolerance and multiculturalism in the epos" Kitabi-Dede Gorgud "and" Song of the Nibelungs ", head of the department of ancient manuscripts of the Dresden library Frank Aurich, director of the Institute of Folklore of ANAS, Professor Mukhtar Imanov, Associate Professor of Baku Slavic University Telman Kazimov and Professor of Baku Slavic University Rahila Geybullayeva, demonstrated similar and distinctive features in both eposes by pointing to the motives of multiculturalism and tolerance.

The work conducted by the Centre for the period of its establishment, has caused great interest of participants. Next, head of the Department of History of Azerbaijan Humboldt University, Professor Eva Maria Auch made a report "Historical foundations of Azerbaijani multiculturalism." The third panel ended with speeches by Professor of the University of Augsburg, Klaus Wolf and Director of the Institute of Philosophy and Law, Professor Ilham Mammadzadeh about the meaning of multiculturalism in Germany and around the world.

Finally, the colloquium participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the Dresden manuscript of "Kitabi-Dede Gorgud". Given the importance of the event, it was decided about the publication and bringing to public attention the proceedings of the colloquium in Azerbaijani and German from BMTSM and Saxon State Library.
