Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

On April 25, the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and the Academy’s Council of Women jointly organized a scientific conference titled “The Great Mother, Scientist, and Woman,” dedicated to the 102nd anniversary of the birth of distinguished scientist, public and political figure, Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, as well as to the “Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty.”

The event, held at the Academy’s Central Scientific Library, was opened by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, with an introductory speech. He spoke about the rich scientific heritage of the outstanding ophthalmologist, scientist Zarifa Aliyeva and the various periods of her career. He said that a series of commemorative events are organized across the scientific institutions and organizations of the Academy in connection with the 102nd anniversary of the birth of Zarifa Aliyeva, who made significant contributions to the field of ophthalmology.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli reminded the order by President Ilham Aliyev dated March 18, 2025, on the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and emphasized that among the tasks of this order are the celebration of the anniversaries of prominent scientists at ANAS and the preparation of new publications. In this regard today’s conference expresses respect and tribute to prominent Academician Zarifa Aliyeva’s memory and also holds great significance as an important event held within the framework of the 80th anniversary of ANAS.

The head of ANAS noted that Zarifa Aliyeva’s multifaceted scientific activity remains relevant and significant today. Speaking about the valuable scientific works of Zarifa Aliyeva dedicated to occupational diseases, Academician Isa Habibbeyli underlined that the outstanding scientist left a rich heritage and through her research and fundamental works, she significantly advanced Azerbaijani medical science. He said that the life of the distinguished ophthalmologist serves as an example for present and future generations. Outstanding ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva will forever live in the hearts of our people as a great scientist, devoted wife and a caring mother.

Then, the Vice-President of ANAS and the Director General of the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnologies of the Ministry of Science and Education, Academician Irada Huseynova delivered a speech about the life path and scientific activity of the scientist. She highlighted that the research of well-known ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva and her great achievements hold a special place in the history of medical science of Azerbaijan.  

“Zarifa Aliyeva, who was awarded numerous prizes and honorary titles, gained the endless love of the people and left an indelible mark on their memories,”- said Academician Irada Huseynova, underlining that the book titled “Current Problems of Ophthalmology”, co-authored by the prominent scientist, was published in English by the “Elm” publishing house within the 80th anniversary of ANAS. The academician noted that the publication of the book in English holds great importance for promoting and introducing the scientific work of the prominent ophthalmologist to the world. She also emphasized that the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli wrote an extensive preface for the publication.

At the event, Vice-President of ANAS, Academician Govhar Bakhshaliyeva, and Chairman of the Women’s Council of ANAS, Doctor of Philosophy, Professor Rena Mirzazade also delivered speeches on scientific activities and exceptional contributions of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva to the development of ophthalmology science in Azerbaijan.

Later, a film dedicated to the life and work of the renowned ophthalmologist and scientist Zarifa Aliyeva was shown.

The reports about scientific works, significant contributions of Zarifa Aliyeva to the treatment of various eye diseases, including the eradication of trachoma in Azerbaijan were also presented at the meeting.

At the end, the presentation of the English edition of the book “Current Problems of Ophthalmology” co-authored by Academician Zarifa Aliyeva took place.
