The 75th Anniversary of Professor Gafar Jabiyev’s Birth Commemorated in Agsu

A scientific-practical conference to mark the 75th anniversary of Professor Gafar Jabiyev, Doctor of Historical Sciences and Head of the Department of Islamic Period Archaeology at the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, was held at the “Medieval Agsu City” State Historical and Cultural Reserve. The conference was jointly organized by the Presidium of ANAS, the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, the Agsu District Executive Authority, and the “Medieval Agsu City” State Historical and Cultural Reserve.

At the outset, conference participants laid floral tributes at the monument of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the center of the district.

In his opening remarks, ANAS President Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that this was the first time the scholar’s jubilee was being held at the Historical and Cultural Reserve. Highlighting the event as a contribution of science to the State Programs on the socio-economic development of Azerbaijan’s regions, approved by the President of the country, he also spoke about recent modernization efforts and reforms within ANAS, including achievements in the field of archaeology.

Academician Habibbeyli emphasized that Professor Gafar Jabiyev, celebrating his 75th anniversary, has devoted a significant part of his life to the study of Azerbaijani history, particularly medieval archaeology. He pointed out that Jabiev’s research has uncovered numerous new scientific facts about medieval settlements, thereby enriching the field of archaeology in Azerbaijan.

The ANAS President highlighted that one of Professor Jabiev’s most significant contributions is his research on the history of the Girdiman region. Over many years of study, Jabiyev extensively examined the political, economic, and cultural life of the ancient Girdiman state, presenting his findings through monographs and scholarly articles, thereby introducing this topic into historiography. These studies have provided a more comprehensive understanding of Azerbaijan’s early medieval history.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli also noted Jabiyev’s important research conducted not only in the Agsu district but also in the Gabala, Shamakhi, and Ismayilli districts. He emphasized that, as the head of the Basgal Archaeological Expedition, Professor Jabiyev has made significant contributions to the preservation of the country’s tangible and cultural heritage. Excavations in Basgal have yielded new scientific material for Azerbaijani archaeology and provided an opportunity to showcase the nation’s heritage to the international community.

The ANAS President added that Professor Jabiyev’s works and scientific contributions are recognized not only in Azerbaijan but also internationally. His articles have been published in scientific journals of various countries and presented at conferences. The scholar has repeatedly participated in international events, presenting Azerbaijan’s ancient history and archaeological findings on the global academic stage.

Academician Isa Habibbeyli also emphasized that, just as in his research, Professor Jabiyev has excelled in pedagogy. His students now serve as historians and archaeologists across different regions of Azerbaijan, reflecting the honoree’s significant role in establishing a scientific school.

In conclusion, the leadership of ANAS emphasized that Professor Jabiyev’s contributions to Azerbaijani science serve as a reliable example for future generations. He was congratulated on the occasion of his 75th anniversary and presented with an Honorary Diploma of ANAS.

Rovshan Baghirov, Head of the Agsu District Executive Authority, also extended his congratulations to Professor Jabiyev, a highly respected scholar, journalist, and public figure. In his speech, he highlighted that Jabiyev has made significant contributions to both Azerbaijani science and the press, excelling as a prolific historian and a talented writer. His research, particularly in the field of archaeology, represents some of the brightest pages in the history of Azerbaijani scholarship. Baghirov further noted that Jabiyev’s successful and productive activities in journalism, science, and public service have been highly valued by the state. By presidential decree, he was awarded the honorary title of “Distinguished Journalist.”

They also noted his repeated service on the National Television and Radio Council and his contributions, as a professional and creative personality, to national and private television and radio broadcasts, offering valuable recommendations to safeguard national values, Azerbaijani history, and the literary language.

Professor Jabiyev was presented with an Honorary Diploma and commemorative gifts in recognition of his contributions.
