Academician Isa Habibbayli: “The ANAS ‘Zangazurnama’ Project Reflects the Support of Azerbaijani Science for the State Policy Implemented by the Head of State Regarding Zangazur”

Following the victory achieved in the Second Karabakh War, the signing of a peace treaty and the opening of the Zangazur Corridor will make a significant contribution to strengthening peace and stability in the region. As a result of the President’s farsighted policy and determined will, the implementation of the Zangazur Corridor project will enable our country to establish more efficient and reliable transport connections between Europe and Asia. This project possesses not only regional but also considerable international political and economic significance.

These remarks were made by the President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), Academician Isa Habibbayli, during his speech at the event titled “The Academy’s Zangazurnama: From Folklore Collections to Academic Research,” organized by the Academy within the framework of the 11th Baku International Book Fair.

Academician Isa Habibbayli noted that for many years, the study of Zangazur had been primarily based on historical sources; however, at present, extensive restoration and research activities are being carried out in Eastern Zangazur. He emphasized the active participation of relevant ANAS institutions in this process.

According to the academician, the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS has conducted extensive archaeological research in the mentioned territories, while the Institute of Folklore has prepared a multivolume publication based on folklore materials collected from Karabakh. The Institute of History has produced various scholarly works grounded in historical sources and archival documents and has translated several publications for the scientific community. Meanwhile, the Institute of Linguistics has prepared “The Dialectological Atlas of the Azerbaijani Language of Karabakh and Eastern Zangazur.”

Academician Habibbayli added that other ANAS institutes also conduct research on Zangazur in line with their respective fields of activity. He stressed that, similar to the “Heydarnamə” and “Karabakhname” projects, ANAS, through the “Zangazurnamə” project, faithfully fulfills its mission of serving the ideals of an independent state in the humanitarian and social spheres by presenting extensive research materials to Azerbaijani society.

Providing information about the publications dedicated to the Zangazur theme, the academician underlined that each presented book is valuable from a scholarly perspective and rich in content. He noted that within the event “The Academy’s Zangazurnama: From Folklore Collections to Academic Research,” ANAS is presenting 56 books related to Zangazur. These publications are significant research works that reflect the historical, folklore, and cultural heritage of Karabakh, Western Azerbaijan, and Zangazur, revealing the true history of the region on a scientific basis.

The ANAS President expressed confidence that, following the “Karabakhname” project, the “Zangazurnama” project would also make a substantial contribution to the development of Azerbaijani science and culture. According to him, the 56 books presented today demonstrate the support of ANAS-and Azerbaijani science as a whole-for President Ilham Aliyev’s policy on the development of Zangazur. He also mentioned that in the near future, the presentation of 100 books dedicated to the Zangazur topic will be held, emphasizing that scientific research in this direction is being carried out systematically and purposefully at ANAS.

Referring to the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between several ANAS research institutions and the National Library of Morocco during the 11th Baku International Book Fair, Academician Isa Habibbayli emphasized that this initiative serves to expand international scientific cooperation.

The head of ANAS underlined that the 11th Baku International Book Fair plays an important role as a platform that brings together representatives of science, literature, and public thought, and he wished new creative successes to all participating authors.
