On October 9, a meeting of the Academic Council of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) was held.
The meeting was attended by Academician Isa Habibbayli, President of ANAS and Director of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature; members of the Academic Council; employees of the Institute; doctoral and dissertation students; and other relevant participants.
The session was opened by Academician Isa Habibbayli, who welcomed the attendees and presented the issues on the agenda.
At the beginning, Associate Professors Zakulla Bayramli and Nigar Isayeva, PhDs in Philology, were awarded Honorary Diplomas of the Institute of Literature in recognition of their 60th anniversaries and productive scholarly work.
Later, Academician Isa Habibbayli spoke about the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, dated September 4, 2025, “On the Celebration of the 90th Anniversary of Yusif Samadoglu,” and the upcoming tasks arising from it. He noted that, in accordance with this decree, the Institute of Literature, together with the journal “Azerbaijan,” will hold a scientific session dedicated to the prominent representative of Azerbaijani literature, People’s Writer Yusif Samadoglu, and that the materials of the event will be published in the journal.
Speaking about the writer’s civic and literary stance, Academician Isa Habibbayli emphasized that Yusif Samadoglu left an indelible mark on literary life with his works rich in social and moral depth - stories and novels that became significant cultural phenomena. He highlighted that the author’s celebrated novel “The Day of Murder”, which explores profound questions about humanity and the world, brought him recognition beyond Azerbaijan’s borders.
Next, Associate Professor Gunay Garayeva, PhD in Philology and Head of the Education Department of the Institute, presented information on the results of the admission process for doctoral studies (PhD) in 2025. She reported that 23 applicants had submitted documents for 12 available positions and were admitted to the foreign language exam. Out of these 23 applicants, 9 passed successfully and advanced to the next stage. As a result, two candidates were admitted to the specialty “Azerbaijani Literature,” one to “Literary Theory,” one to “Literatures of Turkic Peoples,”and three to “World Literature.”
Academician Isa Habibbayli met with the newly admitted doctoral students of the Institute and wished them success in their future scientific endeavors.
The meeting also discussed the dissertation topics of the new doctoral students. Opinions were exchanged and several proposals were voiced.
Afterward, Associate Professor Aygun Baghirli, PhD in Philology and Scientific Secretary, delivered a speech regarding publication and competition matters.
During the session, the Council adopted decisions recommending for publication in modern script the journal “Tuti” (1914–1917); the monograph “Navoi Studies in Afghanistan (Description and Analysis of Sources)” by Azizullah Aral; Associate Professor Safura Guliyeva’s book “Literary Memory – Our Eternal Memory”; Doctor of Philology Alizade Asgarli’s work “The Institute of Literature (2013–2017)”; Senior Researcher Dilara Adilova’s book “Caravans of the Word Journey” from the Department of 20th-Century (Soviet Period) Azerbaijani Literature; the monograph “Zahid Khalil’s Signature in Children’s Literature” prepared by the Department of Children’s Literature; and Associate Professor Solmaz Hayatova’s monograph “The Life, Environment, and Creativity of Suleyman Sani Akhundov,” to be published in the series “The Scientific Passport of the Artist.”
In conclusion, the issue of presenting Shafa Shakir gizi Aliyeva, PhD in Philology and Senior Researcher at the Department of Literary Theory, for the academic title of Associate Professor (specialty code 5715.01 – Theory of Literature, Literary Analysis, and Criticism) was discussed.
