Event Dedicated to Victory Day Held at ANAS

Event Dedicated to Victory Day Held at ANAS

On November 7, the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and the Free Trade Union jointly organized an event dedicated to November 8 – Victory Day.

The ceremony began with the performance of the National Anthem of Azerbaijan, followed by a minute of silence in memory of the martyrs.

Opening the event, President of ANAS, academician Isa Habibbayli, emphasized that November 8 – Victory Day – represents one of the brightest pages in Azerbaijan’s statehood history and congratulated the Academy’s staff on this day of national pride.

Academician Isa Habibbayli noted that the fifth anniversary of Victory Day was being celebrated across the country with great solemnity. He announced that, under the instruction of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ilham Aliyev, a grand military parade with the participation of the heads of state from friendly and brotherly countries would be held in Baku on November 8. He also mentioned that ANAS would be represented in the parade.

The ANAS President underlined that, over the past millennium, there has been no other historic event comparable to the Karabakh Victory in terms of Azerbaijani national identity. Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, through this glorious victory, opened a new chapter in the nation’s thousand-year history and inscribed his name in modern Azerbaijani history in golden letters as a strong and visionary leader.

“Founded by National Leader Heydar Aliyev, Azerbaijan’s development strategy continues successfully,” said Isa Habibbayli, adding that Azerbaijan has become one of the world’s developed and powerful states, established its own military-industrial complex, and nurtured a patriotic, strong, and nationally conscious young generation during President Ilham Aliyev’s leadership. He noted that, as a continuation of the Karabakh Victory, the one-day local anti-terror measures conducted by the Azerbaijani Army under the command of Ilham Aliyev on September 19–20, 2023, led to the complete restoration of the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. Today, he emphasized, the three-colored flag of independent and powerful Azerbaijan proudly waves across all its territories.

Academician Habibbayli highlighted that, according to the decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the year 2025 has been declared the “Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty” in Azerbaijan. He stated that the nation regards this as a historically significant milestone. The decision holds both symbolic and substantive importance, as the country celebrates the joy of fully restoring its territorial integrity and sovereignty while also marking the 30th anniversary of the adoption of its Constitution—the legal foundation of Azerbaijan’s independent statehood.

The ANAS President further recalled that President Ilham Aliyev’s remarkable speech at the 80th anniversary ceremony of ANAS and the priorities he outlined demonstrate the crucial role of Azerbaijani scientists in studying, comprehending, and promoting the history of the Victory, as well as developing it on a scientific basis. In response to the President’s call, Habibbayli said that extensive discussions had been held with scholars from the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions of ANAS, and the key tasks and proposals put forward by the head of state were being gradually reviewed. He stressed that one of the main priorities was to study the Karabakh Victory with integrity, responsibility, and academic precision.

At the end of his address, academician Isa Habibbayli expressed deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for marking the 80th anniversary of ANAS at the state level, for his participation in the ceremony, his programmatic and inspiring speech, and his decree “On awarding individuals for their contributions to the development of Azerbaijani science.” He also wished continued success to President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva in their efforts to further strengthen and develop Azerbaijan’s independence.

Later, several reports were presented at the event, including:

– Professor Mais Emrahov, senior researcher at the Institute of History and Ethnology – “The 44-Day Victory March Beginning on September 27”;

– Associate Professor Hikmat Guliyev, Director of the Institute of Folklore – “The Heroic Model in Folklore and the Commander-in-Chief’s Leadership Mission”;

– Associate Professor Marziya Najafova, senior researcher at the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature – “Reflection of the Victory Theme in Poetry”;

– War veteran Garay Asadov, participant of both the First and Second Karabakh Wars – “The Karabakh Epic Written into My Life”.

The presentations highlighted that the historic victory was achieved under the leadership of Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev, through the unity of the people, the heroism of the Azerbaijani Army, and the strength of the national economy. It was noted that the liberation of Shusha on November 8, 2020, marked Victory Day in history. This triumph further reinforced the foundations of Azerbaijani statehood and provided tangible political and military assurance for the principle of sovereignty enshrined in the Constitution.

Speakers also discussed the extensive reconstruction, restoration, and reintegration efforts underway in Karabakh and East Zangazur, as well as the research being conducted by Azerbaijani scholars related to these regions.

At the conclusion of the event, war veteran Farida Hijran, PhD in Philology and senior researcher at the Department of Turkic Peoples’ Literature of the Institute of Literature, stated that the heroism of the martyrs who brought this Victory to life will forever remain in the nation’s memory and that the veterans are treated with deep respect.
