Academician Isa Habibbayli Delivers a Lecture on Azerbaijani Literature to Chinese Students

The President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbayli, met with students of the Azerbaijani Language Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University who are currently attending advanced training classes in Azerbaijan.

Before the meeting held at the Central Scientific Library, the Academy’s leadership and the students laid bouquets of flowers at the bust of National Leader Heydar Aliyev in the foyer of the library and paid tribute to his memory.

The Chinese students then viewed the exhibition hall of the Library, where they familiarized themselves with visual art pieces created by ANAS scholars. They also visited sections dedicated to National Leader Heydar Aliyev, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva, as well as the Karabakh War Heroes Fund and the busts of the founders of ANAS.

Academician Isa Habibbayli provided the students with detailed information about the sections and exhibits they had seen. He particularly highlighted the scientific legacy of the founders of ANAS, their role in shaping the Academy, and their contributions to the development of science in Azerbaijan.

Speaking about the 80th anniversary meeting of ANAS held on November 3 with the participation of President Ilham Aliyev, the head of ANAS emphasized that Chinese scholars also took part in this significant event, marking a new stage in scientific cooperation between the two countries. He noted that the long-standing strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and China is also yielding成果 in the scientific and cultural spheres, and he praised the work of Dr. Aqshin Aliyev, a lecturer at Beijing Foreign Studies University and PhD in Philology.

During the meeting, Academician Isa Habibbayli delivered a lecture to the Chinese students on the topic “Literary Movements in Azerbaijani Literature”.

The academician outlined the historical stages of development of literary movements in Azerbaijani literature. He stated that literary movements emerging in different periods played an important role in shaping public consciousness and contributed to the preservation and transmission of national and spiritual values to future generations.

The scholar provided a detailed explanation of critical realism and romanticism, which developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He noted that representatives of critical realism openly criticized social injustices, promoting public enlightenment and stimulating social awareness. The romanticism movement, meanwhile, fostered the formation of ideas of freedom, moral purity, and high human values in literature.

Academician Isa Habibbayli also spoke about the historical development, main features, and influence on Azerbaijani literature of decadence, neorealism, modernism, magical realism, and postmodernism. He explained the characteristics of each movement through examples, emphasizing the ideas and values reflected in literary creativity.

The lecture generated significant interest, and the head of ANAS thoroughly answered the students’ questions.

Later, Academician Isa Habibbayli presented the students with monographs published by ANAS, as well as his own authored books and works of fiction. A group photo was also taken.

The Chinese students then visited the administrative building of the Presidium of ANAS, where they learned about the building’s history, architectural features, and the organizational and scientific activities carried out at the Academy.

At the end of the visit, the students expressed deep gratitude to Academician Isa Habibbayli for the warm atmosphere of the meeting and the comprehensive lecture on Azerbaijani literature.

It should be noted that the students of the Azerbaijani Language Department of Beijing Foreign Studies University are currently attending third-year advanced training classes at Khazar University and Baku State University.
