Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences

Professor Ekrem Gürel, Rector of Iğdır University in Türkiye, has been elected an Honorary Professor of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS). On this occasion, a meeting with Turkish guests was held at the Presidium of ANAS.

President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, stated in his speech that relations between Azerbaijan and Türkiye are developing at a high level in all fields, including science and education. He emphasized that the strategic alliance between the two countries, founded on the principle of “One nation, two states” by National Leader Heydar Aliyev and further strengthened at the level of the heads of state, has created a solid foundation for expanding cooperation between academic institutions.

The ANAS President noted that in recent years, scientists from both countries have been implementing joint projects, international conferences, and research programs, contributing to the development of the Turkic world. Academician Habibbeyli, describing the city of Iğdır and its university as close to his heart, shared several personal memories and stated that ANAS would provide the necessary support for further cooperation.

He also highlighted that, by the decision of the Presidium of ANAS dated April 30, 2026, Professor Ekrem Gürel was elected Honorary Professor of the Presidium of ANAS for his contributions to the development of Azerbaijan–Türkiye scientific relations, becoming the first scholar to receive this title.

In his remarks, Professor Ekrem Gürel expressed that he accepted this title with great pride and a deep sense of responsibility. He noted that he wholeheartedly embraces the words of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, “One nation, two states,” and described the award as the most valuable honor he has received in his lifetime. Recalling Ismail Bey Gaspirali’s principle “Unity in language, action, and thought,” he emphasized that the opening of the Zangezur corridor would further strengthen relations between the two countries.

Speaking at the ceremony, Niyazi Turgay, Provincial Police Chief of Iğdır, expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and shared his satisfaction with being in Azerbaijan.

Following the speeches, Professor Ekrem Gürel was presented with the Honorary Professor diploma and robe of the Presidium of ANAS. Commemorative gifts were exchanged, and photographs were taken.

Alongside the Turkish delegation, the meeting was attended by ANAS Vice-President Academician Irada Huseynova, ANAS Academic Secretary Academician Arif Hashimov, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations and International Organizations of the Presidium Office Esmira Alirzayeva, and Head of the Department of Public Relations, Press, and Information Agahuseyn Shukurov.
