Research into the History, Culture and Archaeology of Caucasian Albania to Be Expanded at ANAS

The issue of approving the ANAS Action Plan for Research into the History, Culture and Archaeology of Caucasian Albania was also considered at the regular meeting of the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, stated that systematic and consistent research into the history and cultural heritage of Caucasian Albania was being conducted at ANAS. He also recalled that a scientific conference entitled “Albanian Monuments in the Karabakh Region of Azerbaijan: Historical Reality and Armenian Falsification” had recently been held at ANAS and that a scientific report had been presented at a meeting of the Presidium of ANAS.

Referring to the decision adopted by the Presidium of ANAS on 1 October 2026, Academician Isa Habibbeyli noted that, under Clause 2 of the decision, the Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology of ANAS, the Abbasgulu Agha Bakikhanov Institute of History and Ethnology, and the Institute of Architecture and Art had been instructed to prepare proposals for a comprehensive archaeological, historical and architectural study of the historical and cultural heritage of Caucasian Albania and submit them to the relevant Departments of Humanities and Social Sciences of ANAS by 15 October 2026.

He emphasized that, based on the relevant proposals submitted during the period concerned, the Department of Social Sciences of ANAS had prepared a draft of the “ANAS Action Plan for Research into the History, Culture and Archaeology of Caucasian Albania” and submitted it to the Presidium of ANAS.

He also noted that a large-scale event involving scholars engaged in the study of Caucasian Albania was planned for the end of the current year.

Subsequently, Academician Arif Hashimov, Academic Secretary of ANAS, presented the Action Plan.

The Action Plan provides for the publication of popular-science articles and appearances in the national media, on radio and on television addressing the history and tangible cultural heritage of Caucasian Albania; the dissemination of scientific findings to a broad readership and television and radio audiences; the preparation of cartographic materials on the historical geography of Caucasian Albania that meet modern requirements; the organization of historical and ethnographic expeditions, starting next year, to collect epigraphic and ethnographic materials relating to the history and ethnology of Caucasian Albania; the organization of multidisciplinary archaeological research into the heritage of Caucasian Albania; the expansion of archaeological expeditions; and other measures.

Following extensive discussions, the relevant decision was adopted.
