Azerbaijan is one of the countries having a phenomenon population of longevity

"Azerbaijan is one of the unique regions having a phenomenon population of longevity" said about this Director of ANAS Institute of Physiology, Doctor of Biological Sciences Ulduz Hashimova at General Meeting of ANAS and a joint scientific session of the Collegium of AR Ministry of Health on "Human health is the basis of development of the Azerbaijani society". The scientist noted that, the compact living of long-livers in some areas of the country opens wide opportunities for carrying out gerontological studies based on modern international experience.

U.Hashimova stressed that, the phenomenon of gradual aging of the world population highlights the relevance of complex studies that contribute to the expansion and deepening of knowledge about healthy or "physiological aging".

Noting the existence of unique opportunities for a comprehensive study of the phenomenon of longevity, the director of the Institute brought to attention that the leadership of ANAS gerontology in 2015 was identified as one of the priority areas of Russian science. According to the instruction, a special research program on the biology of aging has been prepared. U.Gashimova stressed that the analysis of official demographic data and conducting medical and biological research in areas with a high longevity index are the components of this program.

Summarizing the results of the study, the scientist described the demographic aspects of longevity in Azerbaijan: "Longevity in certain regions is observed at various levels. Differences between areas vary from 3.4 percent to 53.8 percent. The lowest index of longevity in the country is registered in the Absheron economic zone, the south-eastern and south-western regions. The highest figure is observed mainly in the mountainous and foothill areas of the country. The index of longevity in cities is lower in comparison with the regions. These indicators are similar in geographically close neighborhoods".
