Institute of History expands international relations

A delegation led by academician Yagub Mahmudov, director of the Institute of History of ANAS, visited the Alexandria Library of the Arab Republic of Egypt.

The visit supported by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Egypt.

During the acquaintance with the Library of Alexandria, Yagub Mahmudov was informed about the history, reading rooms and funds of the library. He has closely been interested in the existence of book funds related to Azerbaijan, Caucasus and Central Asia, closely acquainted with the works of al-Masudi, Ibn Fadlan and other Arab geographers in the manuscripts fund.

During the meeting with the head of the Foreign Relations and Protocol Department of the Library Sharif Riyad, the prospects of mutual relations were discussed. Speaking about the history of relations between Azerbaijan and Egypt, Mahmudov noted that the country plays an important role in the history of Islamic culture. He said that the former director of the library, Ismail Serageldin, is an honorary doctor of the History Institute. An international conference dedicated to the great Azerbaijani poet Nizami Ganjavi and the bust of the great thinker was held at the Alexandria Library in 2015.

Yagub Mahmudov informed Sharif Riad about the relocation of Armenians to the Azerbaijani lands and the genocide against our people.

The visit of the Azerbaijani delegation to Alexandria ended with the visit to the Gayitbey fortress (1477), belonging to the period of Mamluk sultans.
