Babayev Ilyas Atababa oglu
Correspondent member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Ilyas Atababa oglu Babayev was born on March 23, 1935 in Khanagah village of Guba region. In 1958 he graduated from the History Department of the Azerbaijan State University (present BSU) with honors. Since then he has worked in the field of archeology in AAS. In 1962-1964 he studied at the postgraduate course at the Leningrad department of the USSR Academy of Archeology in Leningrad (St. Petersburg).

Babayev obtained a Ph.D. in Baku in 1965, and in 1983 he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Science in the Institute of Archeology of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow. Since 1987 he has been the head of the Department of Antique Period Archeology of the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. In 2007 he was elected as a corresponding member of ANAS.

Babayev was a participant, organizer and leader of archaeological expeditions conducting research in different regions of Azerbaijan. He led 2 international archeological expeditions, together with Archeologists of the Republic of Korea in Gabala, Germany, Georgia and Shamkir-Garacemirli archaeological expeditions. Scientists from the Luvan Catholic University in Belgium joined the last expedition in 2014.

I. Babayev has published more than 260 scientific works, including the “Cities of Caucasus Albania. IV- III centuries B.C" (Russian) monograph, 1-2 volumes of "Azerbaijan history", "Azerbaijan numismatics "(Russian), " Nakhchivan Encyclopedia", one of the authors of the textbooks "History of Azerbaijan" and "Ancient World History" for the sixth grades, and the translator of these textbooks into Russian and one of the authors of the textbook "History of Azerbaijan from ancient times to 1871" for history faculties of universities. His more than 80 scientific articles have been published abroad.

Babayev's works are dedicated to the formation of class society and state, social structure of society, ancient international economic and cultural relations, ancient cities of Azerbaijan, money, seals. She has participated in international scientific conferences in different cities around the world.

In addition to scientific research, Babayev studied various history disciplines at the universities of the country for 36 years.

I.Babayev was a Grant Appraisal Expert in the International INTAS organization in Brussels in 2005-2009. In 2001-2010, he was a member of the Expert Council on the History of the Supreme Attestation Commission under the President of the Republic, and in 2011-2012 he was chairman of that council.

12 candidate dissertations were defended under the guidance of I. Babayev.

He died on December 28, 2017.
