B.Budagov was born on February 23,1928 in Chobankara village of Zangibasar (present Masis) of Armenia.He graduated from the Azerbaijan Pedagogical Institute (present ASPU ) in 1951.
B.Budagov was a PhD in Geography in 1955, Doctor of Science in 1967, Professor in 1969.He was elected as a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan in 1976 and an active member in 1989. B.Budagov began his career in 1955 as a junior researcher at the Institute of Geography of the AAS,he worked as chief ccientific officer, head of Landscape Studies Department, deputy director on scientific affairs, and since 1988 - director of the institute. B.Budagov is a well-known geographer in Azerbaijan and abroad. He is one of the founders of the geomorphology, landscape studies and toponimics science schools of the modern geography of Azerbaijan.His scientific activity was devoted to the geomorphology, landscape,new tectonic movements, toponimics,ecology,destructive natural processes, protection of environment, development of large geomorphological maps, development of school geography. B.Budagov is the author of more than 1000 works, including articles and monographs. For the first time in the history of Azerbaijan, he has published important books of science such as "Earth Memories of Turkish Nations", "Explanatory Dictionary of Azerbaijani Origin of Toponyms in Armenia", "Explanatory Dictionary of Turkish Toponyms in Georgia" and "Turkish Toponyms of Eurasia" . B.Budagov's "Geomorphology and New Tectonics of the South Caucasus" was awarded the Gold Medal of the former USSR Geographical Society named after N.M.Prejvalski. By Budagov's leadership up to 50 doctors of sciences and philosophy on geography have been trained. B.Budagov was a member of the Council of Fundamental Problems of the CIS State Geographical Sciences, a member of the Presidium of the Supreme Attestation Commission under the President of the Azerbaijan Republic, chairman of the Toponymic Commission under the Azerbaijani Parliament, President of the Azerbaijan Geographical Society, and Chairman of the Republican Council of Elders. He was one of the organizers of USSR-India, USSR-Bulgaria, USSR-France scientific symposiums, as well as scientific director for Azerbaijan and participated in international conferences in a number of foreign countries. B.Budagov was awarded with the Order of Glory of the Republic of Azerbaijan, academician Y.Mammadaliyev, academician H.Aliyev, poet Mammad Araz, philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev award, World Peace Federation "For Peace in Planet". He was also awarded the title of "Ambassador of the World" by the Inter-Religious and International Federation and Honored Scientist of the Azerbaijan Republic. Academician Budag Budagov died in Baku in 2012. |
