Asadov Sattar Majid oglu
Asadov Sattar Mejid oglu was born on March 15 in 1910 in Shusha. He graduated from the biological faculty of the Azerbaijan State University (1939), defended his thesis and became a PhD in Biology (1945) and a Doctor of science (1961).

Elected as corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR (1962) and active member (1968). He worked at the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan as head of the laboratory of helminthology (1945-1974), Deputy Director for scientific affairs (1947-1950) and director (1950-1960).

S.Asadov’s researches were devoted to the development and analysis of the ecological and geographical fauna of helminths, wild and domestic ruminants in various zones of Azerbaijan, measures to combat helminthic diseases of farm animals.

The scientist identified 12 new species of helminths, unknown to science. He determined the horizontal and vertical zoning of the distribution of helminthic fauna of ruminant animals throughout the territory of the Republic and divided it into 3 main ecological lowlands, foothills and mountain zones, foothills of the mountain ranges of the Greater Caucasus, Central and Eastern Azerbaijan, including heights and surrounding semi-zones.

For the first time in Azerbaijan, the plains were divided into 5 semi-zones (northeastern Azerbaijan, Absheron-Gobustan, along with the untouched parts of the desert, lowland of western Azerbaijan), the foothill zone for 4 semi-zones (Southern foothills of the Greater Caucasus, Eastern foothill areas of the Greater Caucasus, foothills, looking at the Kura-Araz plain, the foothills of the Talish mountains) and in the mountain zone of two half-zones (the heights of the Greater and Lesser Caucasus mountains).

In 1975 under leadership S.M.Asadov and the editorial board were published maps of the distribution of helminths and helminthiases of agricultural animals on zones and intensities of fighting helminthes in Azerbaijan.

Academician S.Asadov is the author and co-author of 132 scientific works, including 3 monographs, 1 book and several scientific mass editions. He was one of the developers of the textbook "Zoology" for secondary school, "Dictionary of zoological terms", and the monograph "The World of Animals of Azerbaijan." Under the guidance of S.Asadov, the theses of 8 PhDs and 2 Doctors of sciences were defended.

He delivered papers on various topics at congresses on helminthology held abroad, scientific conferences and international congresses. S.Asadov was a member of the Terminological Commission of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan SSR, a member of the Editorial Council of Biological Sciences of the Soviet Encyclopedia of Azerbaijan, a member of the Commission of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences and a member of the Fauna Commission of the Transcaucasian Republics.

For many years he was chairman of the Society of Helminthologists of Azerbaijan. He was also chairman of the biology department of the All-Union Society "Bilik" and a branch on the fauna of the Azerbaijan Nature Conservation Society.

S.Asadov was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and several medals.

Academician Sattar Asadov died on February 11, 1974 in Baku.
