Active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Makovelsky Alexander was born on July 22, 1884 in Grodno, Belarus. In 1907 A.Makovelsky graduated from the Department of Philosophy of Kazan University, and in the same year he received the degree of PhD in Philosophy and in 1921 - Doctor of Science. Since 1938, A.Makovelsky received a Professor tittle at Azerbaijan State University. In 1946, A.Makovelsky was elected as a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR and in 1949 - an active member of the Academy of Sciences of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. He began his career as a teacher of philosophy at the Higher Women's Courses in Kazan, then worked as the director of these courses. In 1920 A.Makovelsky arrived in Baku and continued his career in Azerbaijan State University, where until 1930 he headed the department of psychology. In 1929, during the establishment of the Azerbaijan State Scientific Council, the scientist became the scientific secretary, and then was appointed chairman of the scientific and pedagogical department. A.Makovelsky conducted research in the field of ancient Greek history of philosophy, dialectical and historical materialism, logic and history of logic, pedagogy, psychology, as well as research on sophists in ancient Greek philosophy, pre-Socrates school, on atomists and translated their works, wrote a number of comments. A.Makovelsky extensively studied in his writings on the history of Azerbaijani philosophy the issues of Zoroastrianism, Avesta, Mazdeism, Peripatetiism in the East, Neo-Platonism and Atomism, Sufism, Nizami and his place in the East, as well as questions of public and philosophical thought of the XIX century. In 1930 he received the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science." Alexander Makovelsky died in 1969. |
