Four new «hot Jupiters» discovered

Astronomers have discovered a hot Jupiter with an unusual orbit

Kingsside University astronomers with the WASP-South telescope have discovered four new hot Jupiters, two of which have unusual characteristics. One of them is an exoplanet with one of the highest known temperatures, and the other has a strange orbit and may have migrated closer to its parent star, according to an online publication on Chronicle.info, citing zn.ua.

The WASP-185b exoplanet is 900 light-years from the Sun, its radius is approximately 1.25 of Jupiter's radius, and the masses of the planets are approximately the same. The unusual properties of the planet can be attributed to the characteristics of its orbit with an eccentricity of about 0.24 orbital period of about 9.4 Earth days. Usually these hot Jupiters are closer to their star. Given the age of the star ($ 6.6 billion), astronomers suggest that WASP-185b has arrived in its current orbit sooner or has gravitationally impacted from another planet, probably located on the outside of the system.

Another planet, WASP-178b, is 1360 light-years from Earth. The temperature of the extrasolar planets of the day reaches 2470 Kelvin, making it one of the hottest planets currently known. This temperature is caused by the fact that WASP-178b is only 0.056 astronomical units away from its parent star.
