Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

This year, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is 100 universary. The past century has been marked by many advances in the Universe science, which have greatly influenced not only the development of physics, but also culture and technological breakthroughs.

Events held throughout the year focus on astronomy as an important tool in education, development and diplomacy.

As part of the celebration of its 100th anniversary, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) launched the IAU100 NameExoWorlds campaign, which allows any country in the world to choose the name of a planetary system consisting of a star and its exoplanet. Azerbaijan is also among the 100 countries that have joined the project.

It should be noted that, the first project, which allowed to name exoplanets and stars, was implemented in 2015, as a result of which 19 exoplanets were named. The star HD 152581 in the zodiac “Ophiuchus” and the exoplanet HD 152581b were separated for Azerbaijan.

The final results of the project will be announced in December 2019.
