Azerbaijan National Academy of Science

The scientific community of Azerbaijan suffered a heavy loss. An outstanding orientalist, active member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, Honored Scientist, head of the Department of Arabic Philology of Baku State University, personal pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Doctor of philology, Professor Vasim Mammadaliyev died on October 13, 2019, at 78th.

V.Mammadaliev was born in 1942 in the doctor's family, in Baku. In 1964 he graduated from BSU Faculty of Oriental Studies. In 1964-1967 he began his PhD study in the Azerbaijan University of Languages and graduated in Tbilisi under the guidance of the world-famous orientalist, academician G.V.Tsereteli.

In 1968 he defended PhD on "Comparative-typological analysis of the tense forms of the verb in modern Arabic and Azerbaijani languages and in the Baghdad dialect", in 1974 he defended his doctoral on "Categories of time, person and mood in the modern Arabic literary language". He was the youngest Doctor of Sciences in the USSR in this field.

In 1978, the scientist awarded the Professor title, in 2001 he was elected as a corresponding member of ANAS, in 2007 - active member.

Thanks to his rich scientific and pedagogical activity Vasim Mammadaliev for many years made a valuable contribution to the science and education of Azerbaijan. The fundamental research of the scientist, devoted to the systematic study of topical problems of Arabic linguistics, has been widely recognized as a contribution to world oriental studies. In these studies, rich in new considerations, the scientist also emphasized that the linguistic tradition in Azerbaijan has a long history.

Vasim Mammadaliev is also known as the author of works in various areas of oriental philology and poetry, Islamic history and philosophy. As one of the translators of the Quran, he owes great merit to the revival of theology and Islamic studies in our country.

Vasim Mammadaliev combined his scientific activities with teaching and spent half a century at Baku State University to train highly qualified personnel.

Numerous students from a prominent academic who made a significant contribution to turning Azerbaijan into one of the most advanced centers for Arab studies in the former Soviet Union successfully represented our country in Azerbaijan and beyond.

The results of scientific research by Vasim Mammadaliev are reflected in more than 30 books and about 600 scientific and journalistic articles. Under his leadership, more than 50 PhD and Doctors of science were trained.

The scientist’s speeches at international symposiums, conferences and forums around the world were warmly received by the scientific community.

Academician Vasim Mammadaliev was appreciated by the state for the many years of effective work. He was awarded the highest state awards of the independent Republic of Azerbaijan - “Sharaf” and “Shohrat” orders, for his contribution to the development of science and education.

The memory of the outstanding scientist and teacher, real intellectual and sincere person Mammadaliev Vasim Mammadali oglu will always live in us.
