The names "Mahsati" and "Ganja" announced the winners of the contest "Name exoplanets BAI100"

The results of the contest “Name the exoplanets BAI100”, organized on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Astronomical Union (IAS) in more than 110 countries of the world, have been announced.

The International Astronomical Union has identified a bright star that can be observed from this country with small telescopes. The competition was organized by national coordinators in the participating countries, and public proposals were taken into account. The 10 best proposals that meet the competition conditions were selected and put to a public vote. Based on the results of the vote, the three proposals with the most votes were submitted to the IAC for evaluation. This multi-step process was attended by 780,000 amateur astronomers and professionals from more than 110 countries.

Azerbaijan is also among the participants in this competition. As part of the competition, the star HD 152581 located in the constellation “Ophiuchus” and the exoplanet HD 152581b moving around it were allocated to Azerbaijan.

More than thousands of proposals were put forward, covering geographical names, historical figures, architectural monuments, etc. Registered proposals were evaluated and 10 proposals were selected and put to a vote. The three proposals that received the most votes in a public vote were submitted to the International Astronomical Union.

The International Astronomical Union evaluated the results of the competition and announced the winners. The winner from Azerbaijan was the proposed Mahsati and Ganja proposed by Natella Karimova.

Note that the names that become the winners will be used in parallel with the existing scientific nomenclature.
