Hong Kong scientists learn how to use rainwater as energy

Ordinary rainwater can become a virtually inexhaustible source of electricity. Just one drop is enough to light a hundred small LED lamps, according to the authors of the method from City University of Hong Kong.

According to scientists, a drop that contains 100 microliters of water, when dropped from a height of only 15 cm, can generate a voltage of more than 140V. When creating the device used aluminum electrodes and electrodes of indium oxide with tin, as well as a film of polytetrafluoroethylene. The team found that as water droplets hit the surface and spread, they act as a “bridge” that connects the two electrodes.

As the authors explain, droplets act as resistors, and the coating acts as a capacitor. A film is necessary not only for energy generation, but also for storage and induction of charges that arise when droplets move. It was this component that scientists did not have in previous experiments - they simply could not achieve the generation of a sufficient amount of energy.
