Corresponding member of ANAS Evgeny Pakhomov turns 140

Today, 140 years pass since the birth of Evgeny Pakhomov, a celebrate historian, numismatic, Honored Scientist of Azerbaijan with order “Sharaf”, corresponding member of ANAS Evgeny Pakhomov.

Evgeny Alexandrovich Pakhomov was born on February 25, 1880 in Stavropol, Russia. While studying in Tbilisi at a young age, he became interested in archeology. While working in the Transcaucasian Excise Office, a young specialist touring Azerbaijan and Georgia showed interest in the cultural monuments of the region. Invited to teach at the Azerbaijan State University, founded in 1919, Y. Pakhomov moved to Baku and devoted his entire life to studying the history of Azerbaijan. He worked at the university in 1920-1965, E.Pakhomov also headed the department at the Azerbaijan History Museum and in 1933-65 worked as a research fellow at the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences.

E. Pakhomov created a unique numismatics collection of the Middle and Middle East, Ancient Roman Empire and Greece, as well as Russian coins, famous for their richness and value in the former Soviet Union. He first raised the museum's collection, which holds 103 coins, to 30,000. E.Pakhomov has developed and published a series of coin treasures in Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. In 1959 the first issue of his monograph “Azerbaijan coins” was published.

In 1946 E. Pakhomov defended his doctoral thesis on "The Treasures of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus". In 1947 he was given the academic title of professor, and in 1962 he was elected a corresponding member of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. In 1955 E.Pakhomov was awarded the title of Honored Scientist of the Azerbaijan SSR.

For his contribution to the development of science and effective pedagogical activity, E.Pakhomov was awarded the Order of Honor and several medals.

Note that, by the decision of Presidium of ANAS, a scientific session will be held on his merits in history and numismatics as well as 140th anniversary of birth.
